What are the responsibilities and job description for the Major Gifts Officer position at Covenant House Greater Washington?

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The incumbent is responsible for seeking out opportunities and developing and implementing initiatives to identify, cultivate, solicit, and maintain relationships with individual prospects to ensure a strong base of ongoing financial support for Covenant House Greater Washington (CHGW). The Incumbent will work with the Chief Development & External Affairs Officer
(CDEAO), Chief Executive Officer, Board Members, and volunteers for solicitation of personal donations. Work under the leadership of the CDEAO to set budget revenue goals for the Major Gifts program. Prepare written materials and help develop policy and systems. Oversee maintenance of Major Gift’s prospects and donor records in database. Manage the Major Gifts Program in a manner that reflects the mission, philosophy, and policies of Covenant House Greater Washington.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Development & External Affairs Officer

SUMMARY OF DUTIES (Responsibilities to include but not limited to the following)

  • Oversee and manage major gifts program of Covenant House Greater Washington, supervising relationship building process with major donors.
  • In consultation with the CDEAO, establish budget goals for the Major Gifts category and develop strategies to reach these prospects.
  • Develop system for researching major donors including prospecting, evaluating, cultivation strategies, and solicitation techniques.
  • Establish and maintain a donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure that new major donors are developed, have opportunities to increase their level of support annually, and enjoy a close relationship with CHGW.
  • Develop strategies to facilitate personal solicitation of prospects by board and committee members.
  • Prepare written materials, including correspondence, solicitation materials, acknowledgements, and regular communications as part of the ongoing stewardship of major donors.
  • Prepare monitoring and evaluation tool to evaluate success of Major Gifts program at regular intervals.
  • Maintenance of the major donor database.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Regular internal contact with all CHGW staff and regular contact with Board Members and current and prospective donors.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Education: Master’s Degree preferred. Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience: Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in the field of resource development with an emphasis on major giving. Prior success in developing and achieving major giving revenue goals.

Knowledge:

  • Computer literacy. Proficient in Windows environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Considerable concentration.
  • Moderate interruptions.
  • Moderate noise level.
  • Moderate travel alone or with CDEAO or CEO Executive Director to solicit gifts. Moderate sitting and eyestrain.
  • Light standing, walking, bending and lifting.

Pay: Up to $70,000.00 per year
