What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Public Defender position at Dawson County?
Position Summary:The Deputy Public Defender is responsible for providing clients with legal representation during all phases of a case, preparing and presenting their defense, and ensuring the timely submission of legal documents and reports. This position will need to defend criminal cases successfully and maintain cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders.
Essential Job Functions
- Interview defendants and witnesses, analyzing strengths and weaknesses of cases and determine best defense strategy to pursue.
- Present cases in court, as well as appeal criminal defense cases in appeals courts, present post-conviction relief actions to the court.
- Prepare affidavits, opinions, and memorandums of Habeas Corpus. Write and/or dictate correspondence and reports.
- Prepare and defend all level of misdemeanor and felony criminal cases.
- Study, interpret, and apply laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities in the preparation of cases, opinions, petitions, motions, legal briefs, and other legal documents.
- Review progress of matters and proceedings.
- All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Talents
- Thorough knowledge of the legal profession and its practices and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of County government and administrative law.
- Ability to analyze complex legal issues and identify significant cases, opinions, and facts.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate in Law and admitted to the State Bar of Nebraska.
- Legal experience in the practice of law, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Physical Requirements
This position must be able to sit for long periods of time, operate a computer, office equipment, and may occasionally lift up to 20lbs.
Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to indoor conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. May include possible yelling, cursing, shouting, name calling, and inappropriate comments from clients.

Pay: $95,000.00 per year
