Job Summary:
The Communications Director is responsible for proactively planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of Erlanger’s internal and external communications efforts. This includes day-to-day media relations, public relations strategy, crisis communications preparedness, executive messaging, and employee communications.
The role serves as Erlanger’s principal spokesperson and PR strategist—managing communications risks and opportunities with confidence, clarity, and alignment to the system’s mission and values.
The Communications Director will lead both proactive storytelling efforts and responsive communication across complex, sensitive, and fast-moving issues.
This individual must be a collaborative leader with sound judgment, excellent writing and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build trust across hospital leadership, staff, media outlets, and external partners.
Education:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in Strategic Communications, Public Administration, or related area
Experience:
Required:
- 7-10 years of progressive communications experience, including crisis and media relations
- Strong background in healthcare, nonprofit, government, or similarly complex/public-facing organizations
- Exceptional writing, editing, and messaging development skills
Preferred:
- Experience working with external PR agencies or reputation firms
- Familiarity with hospital system governance and internal communication environments
