Background
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center’s (CPC) mission is to deliver real-time products and information that predict and describe climate variations on timescales from weeks to years thereby promoting effective management of climate risk and a climate-resilient society. The tasks of ERT are to provide Scientific Support Service, in assisting CPC: operationally acquiring, processing and dissemination of current climate data, information and analyses; as well as conduct research and development to improve techniques for prediction, investigating weather and climate variability and extremes.
ERT is seeking a full time Scientific Programmer to support the development and production of satellite based climate products at NWS Climate Prediction Center (CPC) at College Park, MD.
Duties of the scientific programmer include, but are not limited to:
- Development and routine production of the CMORPH satellite precipitation estimates;
- Development and routine production of the satellite-observed global OLR data sets;
- Gauge-based analysis of global and regional precipitation;
- Other observational global and regional data sets; and
- Applications of the above-mentioned data sets in climate, hydroclimate and decision-making supports
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in developing large-scale observational data sets using objective analysis techniques and in handling satellite observation data;
- Strong program skills with Linux scripts, Fortran and other advanced languages;
- Familiar with numerical algorithms / schemes for objective analysis
- Skills in using computer based graphics software (e.g. GrADS, IDL);
- Willingness to learn new technologies (e.g. AI, parallel computation, Python) and their applications in construction of climate data sets will be a plus.
The candidate is expected to work locally in CPC’s office in College Park, MD. Some telework may be permitted.
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government information and systems.
Education
Master's in atmospheric hydroclimate sciences or related physical sciences, or related field. PhD preferred.
