Reporting to the Technician Coordinator of the School of Art and Design, the Part-Time Technology Associate assists instructors, maintains weaving studio equipment, and inventory. Key responsibilities include assisting students with equipment, troubleshooting, technical guidance, and exhibition support. The job includes cross training for other areas of textile design.

Responsibilities

• Assist instructors with demonstration lessons and practical knowledge.
• Prepare studio and equipment/ looms for scheduled weaving classes.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair looms and weaving equipment.
• Maintain inventory of all tools and equipment, research and recommend new and replacement tools, and obtain quotes for the purchase.
• Maintain and organize studios, weaving supplies, yarns, and equipment.
• Assist students independently with loom preparation, weaving techniques, loom operation, troubleshooting, and technical construction.
• Create written documents and digital materials for student instructions and troubleshooting guides for various equipment, including photos and videos.
• Organize, create, and maintain loom weaving sign up times and studio schedules.
• Assess yarn inventory and make suggestions for color and style; communicate with suppliers to obtain quotes for yarn and equipment; manage yarn budget.
• Analyze problems, make suggestions, and resolve, working in consultation with the instructor.
• Oversee open labs to ensure that students operate equipment safely and follow best practices.
• Communicate with suppliers to manage maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
• Display student work in showcases and/or assist with organizing and hanging.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Textile Design, Textile Development, or a related field.
• Three (3) years of experience in hand weaving using handlooms and computer-interfaced dobby looms, either professionally for fabrication or as personal fiber arts work.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with computer-aided design software for woven textiles: i.e. Pointcarre or equivalent professional software.
• Experience with complex dobby structures and looms up to 24 harnesses.
  
  

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Expertise in set-up, operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of handlooms and computer-interfaced dobby looms.
• Knowledge of 8 harness weaving structures.
• Familiarity with textile terminology and materials, combined with working knowledge of various loom types, including table looms, and floor looms.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Google Docs, spreadsheets, and google calendar preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Exceptional organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records while keeping weaving studios orderly.
• Strong aptitude for learning, readily adapting to new tasks and acquiring diverse skill sets through cross-training.
• Detail-oriented, conscientious, self-motivated, resourceful, flexible, and punctual.
• Proven ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Salary

Salary: $46.62 per hour

The UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) dictates the compensation, benefits, and conditions of employment. Hiring Rate: $46.62 per hour with step increments per Salary Schedule 93, after 18 months of service and annually thereafter.

Work Schedule

Days/Hours: M-F, 25 hours per week, in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.

Physical Requirements And Work Environment

The physical requirement for this position will require occasional sitting, frequent standing, constant bending and walking, occasional climbing, lifting 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., and moving looms with assistance. The working conditions for this position will be any combination of the classroom, lab, and/or office space. Certain roles may be required to handle machinery and chemicals or occasionally lifting 50 lbs. or more.
