What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corrections Adult Education Instructor position at Fayette County Community Action Agency Inc?
The Corrections Adult Education Instructor is responsible for delivering educational programs to incarcerated adults, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for personal development, employability, and successful reentry into society. The instructor facilitates a range of educational offerings, including basic literacy, GED preparation, vocational training, and life skills development, in alignment with institutional regulations and program goals.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Instructional Delivery
- Design and deliver lesson plans tailored to the diverse educational levels and needs of adult learners
- Provide instruction in subjects such as mathematics, reading, writing, science, social studies, and vocational skills
- Use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, group discussions, hands-on activities and digital learning
Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring
- Assess learners’ skills levels through diagnostic testing and observation
- Monitor and record student progress, providing constructive feedback and adjusting teaching strategies as needed
- Prepare students for standardized testing, such as GED or other certifications
- Other related duties as assigned
Classroom Management
- Maintain a structured and respectful classroom environment that adheres to the facility rules and regulations and safety protocols
- Address behavioral challenges promptly and professionally with appropriate prison staff to continue to foster a positive learning environment
Curriculum Development
- Develop and update curriculum and instructional materials to meet the needs of the adult learners and align with institutional and state education standards
- Include topics such as employability skills, financial literacy, and personal development
Collaboration and Reporting
- Work closely with corrections staff, case managers, and other organizations and agencies to coordinate educational programming
- Participate in all Bureau of Justice, FCCAA and Fayette County Jail, required trainings
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure all activities comply with the correctional facility regulations, security protocols, and confidentiality requirements
- Maintain awareness of potential safety risks and report incidents and/or concerns promptly
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education, or related field
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
- 3 years or more of previous teaching experience in Adult Education, Corrections, or Alternative Education preferred
- Ability to work with diverse populations, including individuals with learning disabilities and varying educational levels
- Proficiency in curriculum development and assessment strategies
- Ability to plan and organize daily work
- Ability to successfully pass Federal and State criminal background check and PA Child Abuse Clearance screening
