What are the responsibilities and job description for the Interpretive Specialist position at Five Rivers MetroParks?

The Interpretive Specialist develops, coordinates, and presents self-directed interpretive activities throughout Five Rivers MetroParks (FRMP) to help the public connect to nature.  
  • Assists with the production of interpretive media for park visitors and target audiences. Writes and develops text for signs and brochures, website, social media, and video scripts. Consults content experts and utilizes historical documents and other resources to assure accuracy of interpretive content. 

  • Works collaboratively with appropriate staff, local organizations, and subject matter experts, to present FRMP natural and cultural resources in ways that are inclusive and relevant to diverse communities. 

  • Assists with the development of interpretive plans. Attends meetings, helps gather information and documentation, and participates in development of concept ideas. 

  • Identifies, records, and conducts, research on MetroParks’ natural and cultural resources, and other topics relating to interpretive projects utilizing various sources and methods including archives, journal articles, books, photographs, interviews, and other sources. 

  • Analyzes data to determine accuracy, authenticity, and significance. Summarizes information and compiles reports, fact sheets, and other materials to document facts and stories. 

  • Assists with installation, inspection, repair, and removal of interpretive media.  

  • Provides content for articles, newsletters, brochures, displays, and other materials designed to inform and educate the public.  

  • Supports evaluation of interpretive media effectiveness by conducting surveys, making observations, and collecting and entering data into spreadsheets and other applications. Makes recommendations to improve interpretation, visitor experience, and related amenities and processes. 

  • Utilizes GIS technology to collect and enter data for Interpretive Media Inventory and other projects.  

  • Schedules, observes, trains, and works with volunteers to support projects and interpretive programs.  

  • Tracks expenses, project hours, and other information requested for reporting. 

  • Supports division projects, programs, facility tours and experiences, outreach efforts, and agency/division special events.

  • Demonstrates agency values and professionalism. Adheres to agency policies and safety regulations. 

  • Collaborates internally, within and across functional areas, to provide information and service to others in the organization to contribute to the effective operation of the agency and all staff. 

  • Uses technology to present agency stories, improve public access to content, and reach multiple audiences.  

  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with contractors, program participants, and community groups. 

  • Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance, and works outside of normal schedule as required 

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

  • Assists with identifying, recording, and researching MetroParks’ resources in support of MetroParks’ stewardship efforts. 

  • Associate degree in communicationInterpretation, Parks and Museum Education, Environmental Education, History, or other relevant field, and one-year relevant programming experience.
  • Willingness and ability to work an irregular schedule, including evenings and weekends. 

  • Ohio Drivers' License which meets FRMP insurance carrier guidelines. 

  • National Association for Interpretation Certified Heritage Interpreter preferred. 

Salary : $32,864 - $41,080
