Job Description: Home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection, Folger Shakespeare Library is a world-class center for scholarship, learning, culture, and the arts. Folger Theatre is a not-for-profit AEA company that produces a full season of plays by Shakespeare and other world-class playwrights. The 2023/24 season productions unite under the theme “What’s Your Story?” Following three years of Folger programs “On the Road,” the Folger’s Elizabethan-style theater and new expansive public spaces will again play host to award-winning performances, concerts, and readings that embody stories of transformation, mirroring its own physical and spiritual evolution. Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking Wardrobe Crew to join a dynamic and engaging Production team for the 2023/24 season. The Wardrobe Crew is responsible for assisting the Wardrobe Supervisor with all wardrobe related needs for each production. Duties include assisting with fittings, wardrobe maintenance, and running of theater productions. This position reports to the Wardrobe Supervisor, Production Stage Manager, and Assistant Stage Manager. The production dates are: Production 1: The Winter’s Tale September 27 – December 3, 2023 Production 2: The Reading Room January 22–29, 2024 Production 3: Where We Belong January 29 – March 24, 2024 Production 4: Metamorphoses April 8 – June 23, 2024 NOTE: In your application materials (brief cover letter and resume), please share your interest and availability for one or more of the productions listed above. Compensation: This position is a weekly-paid position, at a rate of $20/hour. This role has the ability to earn overtime pay. Overtime is 1.5x the pay rate for all hours worked over 40 in one week. Duties: The Run Crew portion of each production begins with tech week. The performance schedule is typically an eight-show week. Hours vary based on show needs, with evening and weekend hours required. The Wardrobe Crew will be provided a seasonal calendar with days that attendance is mandatory. Works with the Costume Designers and Wardrobe Supervisor to ensure smooth running of wardrobe and costumes for theatrical productions. Runs shows, including the maintenance of costumes, upkeep of wardrobe areas, and facilitation of quick changes. Ensures proper labeling, hanging, storage, and preset of all costume pieces. Assists with the application and maintenance of wigs, application of makeup, and other hair and makeup related items, as needed. Communicates clearly with the Production Manager/Technical Director, Wardrobe Supervisor, ATD and Production Creative Team members, as needed. Assists with the maintenance of wardrobe supplies including support to Production Manager/Technical Director, Wardrobe Supervisor, and ATD with regard to maintaining wardrobe equipment. Inventories supplies and equipment and assess condition as needed. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the theater facility. Participates in the load in and strike of wardrobe elements. Ensures all items are properly cleaned. Assists with stitch work during tech week, as needed. Assists with run crew duties, as needed. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in theater arts with a concentration on theater production, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of two years of technical experience in theater production, including costume construction and maintenance, wig maintenance, makeup, hair styling, basic technical craft skills, and production communication practices. Ability to handle multiple tasks and elements and work with a variety of people Physical Requirements: This job operates in a professional theatre environment, and the employee may be exposed to various components of a theatrical environment such as florescent lighting, low light environment, strobing light effects, atmospheric effects, pollen, dust, recycled air, cooling fans, semi-enclosed areas, central heating, seasonal warmer temperatures, and office noise. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
