What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Nurse II (School Health) 12 Month position at Forsyth County (NC)?
Forsyth County Department of Public Health has an opening for a Public Health Nurse II. This School Nurse position works 12-months. Responsibilities include monitoring the immunization status of students, implementing emergency care plans, and developing, teaching, and monitoring plans of care for students with special health needs. The nurse also teaches/monitors/assists school staff in daily administration and documentation of medications. The nurse assists with investigating and monitoring communicable diseases not only in the assigned schools but may also assist during outbreaks in other areas of Forsyth County. The nurse interacts with students and their families on a regular basis and develops positive relationships that will enhance students' educational experiences. This nurse works primarily with students with chronic health conditions and higher health needs requiring procedures/medications daily.
This is a school-based position, the nurse travels directly from home to the assigned school on a daily basis. A driver’s license is required in order to travel to the other assigned schools and to make home visits, if necessary. A county vehicle may be available for such visits.
Bilingual, Spanish/English, preferred
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs;
Working knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of public health;
Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health;
Knowledge of available resources and organizations in the community;
Ability to record accurately the services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees;
Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions and;
Ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintain effective working relationships. Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a public health nursing rotation and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area; or
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience in specialty area assigned.
Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Individuals hired without a rotation through a public health department as part of educational requirement will be required to complete Introduction to the Public Health Nursing course within one year of hire.
