Mechanical Design Technician

Position Purpose:

• Provide mechanical equipment designs and layouts using CAD-based formats (AutoCAD® 2023, Inventor 2023) while adhering to established drafting standards.
• Develop and update documentation such as drawing packages, equipment build packages, machine part lists, illustrations, and machine specifications for production equipment.
• Modify existing documentation and ensure complete, accurate drawing packages with appropriate detail and assembly drawings as needed.

Major Responsibilities:

• Redesign mechanical components to reduce installation costs, resolve equipment interferences, and improve design effectiveness.
• Create, review, and update installation documentation and drawings as required.
• Mark up existing drawings and coordinate with drafting services or oversee draftsmen to resolve design issues.
• Implement design changes to address equipment and process issues.
• Ensure all designs meet form, fit, and function requirements as specified by internal customers and project managers.
• Provide sketches or marked-up drawings based on project needs and evolving equipment requirements.

Desired Skills & Experience:

Education:

• AAS in Mechanical Engineering Technology, BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology, or BS in Mechanical Engineering.
• Equivalent work experience may be considered in rare cases.

Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skills:

• Self-motivated and results-oriented.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in small teams.
• Well-organized with a strong understanding of GD&T.
• Proficiency in pneumatic and electrical schematics.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical drive trains, electrical and pneumatic actuators.

Special Requirements:

• Capable of generating a full drawing package for industrial equipment, from assembly to detailed drawings.
• Deep understanding of mechanical equipment and systems for both new designs and modifications.
• Able to perform basic design calculations (e.g., statics, hydraulics, power transmission).

Software & Equipment:

• Experience with Windows, MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word), AutoCAD® 2023, Vault, and Inventor 2023.

Travel Requirements:

• Occasional travel to the Concord Plant or equipment vendors to gather drawing/equipment information, though this will be rare. Minimal time may be spent on the production floor collecting data on existing equipment.

Equipment Familiarization:

• Proficiency with personal computers and precision measurement devices (e.g., tape measures, calipers, micrometers).
• Knowledge of machine shop and fabrication processes for designing efficient manufacturing solutions.

Additional Information:

• This role is based in Wilmington, NC. Contractors who excel in this position may be considered for additional projects, though future assignments may be located at different sites.
• Occasional overtime may be required, typically ranging from 10-20 hours per week.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $26.47 - $29.47 per hour
