A student worker orientation session with safety training will take place at the start of the fall and spring semesters. The training is required for all new and returning student workers. Position Summary
Career Readiness Learning Objectives:
- Communication: The student workers in laboratory preparation and office assistant roles will clearly and effectively exchange information with the Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator and Department chair/faculty, respectively. Student workers in teaching assistant roles will clearly and effectively exchange information with laboratory instructors who they are assisting and provide guidance and perspectives to students who they are mentoring in the laboratory.
- Critical Thinking: Student workers will use their knowledge of chemistry concepts and safety protocols to assist the Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator, faculty members, and other student workers in solving problems that arise in the preparation process and/or instruction of students.
- Teamwork: Student workers will build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty members, chemistry laboratory coordinator, and other student workers to accomplish the common goals of preparing instructional laboratories and teaching enrolled students safely and efficiently.
- Laboratory Preparation Assistants. Laboratory Setup Assistants (LPAs) prepare and label solutions used in the labs, set out supplies for each experiment, and help to clean up after the lab sessions are completed each week.
- Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants (TAs) are responsible for attending each lab meeting, where they assist with the overall operation and instruction of the meeting. TAs offer guidance to peers on proper laboratory technique, provide reminders about safety precautions and ensure that procedures are being followed properly.
- Stockroom Assistants. Stockroom Assistants sign out supplies to students participating in the various laboratory sessions operating during their shift. Stockroom personnel help to maintain a neat and orderly storage area by assisting with cleaning glassware, organizing supplies and performing regular inspections of the stockroom.
- Office Assistants. Office Assistants work in the Chemistry Office (Zurn 414) and provide administrative support to the chemistry faculty. Office Assistants may be assigned to specific projects or faculty members. They may make photocopies, scan paperwork, run errands across campus, or help with grading.
Required Qualifications
The applicant should have completed at least two semesters of 100-level chemistry laboratories.

- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong background in laboratory coursework
Must be able to work in a laboratory environment.
