How will you make an impact?
The Tax Accountant (TA), Indirect Tax, is responsible for analyzing and preparing Business Personal Property returns, Sales Tax returns and the Payroll Tax deposits and employment returns for Canada. The TA is responsible for the car tax payments as it relates to the property tax associated with our Rail Operations. This individual will also assist the Manager, Indirect Tax in providing assistance on audits, property tax appeals, and on various projects, as may be required.
What are your key activities?
- Prepare State and local property tax returns for GATX Corporation and GATX Rail Locomotive Group, subject to the review of the Manager, Indirect Tax. This responsibility includes researching tax laws and cases, assembling and analyzing data used in the return preparation process. The TA is responsible for importing the data into the Property Tax Management system (PTMS).
- Analysis of assessment notices for the railcars, locomotives and real property. Manage any Appeals/Protests on the property tax appraisals.
- Prepare the GST/HST and Provincial Sales tax returns for Canada, subject to the review of the Manager, Indirect Tax. Research and analyze data used in the return preparation process
- Prepare and review Real and Personal Property tax accrual amounts on a quarterly basis.
- Assemble and prepare Car Tax Payments (PTMS) for all GATX Companies.
- Prepare the payroll tax deposits and employment taxes for Canada. Research and analyze data used in the return preparation process, and reconciliation of the tax accounts on a quarterly basis.
- Various special project work. Project work includes all areas of tax and varies from month to month.
What is required of you?
- Bachelor’s Degree required in Accounting or Finance
- At least 2 years general business experience in a professional office environment, preferably in a property or sales/use tax department at large corporation or professional firm.
- Proficiency in multiple PC applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SAP experience a plus.
- Strong analytical skills
- Payroll tax experience a plus
