General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We have an exciting opportunity for a User Interface and Software Utilities Software Manager in our Technologies Department located in Rancho Bernardo, CA. This is a first-line functional management position and this position manages software planning, coordination, development, and testing for products being developed under both government contracts and Internal Research and Development (IR&D) activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manages a group of software developers in designing software user interfaces and software utilities.
  • Responsible for the planning, managing and technical performance of one or more software engineering programs.
  • Establish software design concepts, criteria and engineering efforts for product research, development, testing support and integration support.
  • Ensure requirements and design reviews, along with all other applicable processes are performed on programs being executed by direct reports.
  • Lead progress review sessions to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance. Identify software engineering issues and provide leadership in developing solutions including interacting with internal technical staff and external representatives concerning resolution for technical and scheduling issues.
  • Coach the teams to provide visibility into status, provide early warning of issues on programs, articulate the help needed and identify impediments.
  • Plan, engage and drive execution on department-wide initiatives such as unit test automation, static analysis and peer review process improvement.
  • Proactively manage knowledge transfer in the group.
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals, and the development of new business.
  • Ensure that all programs are properly staffed with appropriately skilled software developers as required.
  • Ensure technical leadership and excellence is maintained by participating in the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required management, professional, and technical talent.
  • Participate with technical staff, program managers and/or Division/Group executive management to develop and implement current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business and financial objectives for the department.
  • May be responsible for decisions that impact outcomes where erroneous decisions could cause serious schedule delays and expenditure of additional time, resources and funds.
  • Create and implement training plans for staff to maximize the depth and breadth of skill in the Architecture Group.
  • Maintain manpower planning metrics to support long-term plans for hiring and training
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in engineering or a related technical field as well as eleven or more years of progressively complex software engineering experience with at least five of those years having management responsibilities. Equivalent experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
  • Must have demonstrated experience managing teams of Software Engineers, proactively managing performance, developing and coaching technical leads and managers, and communicating expectations to the team.
  • Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
  • Experience working on GA-EMS Advanced Launch and Recovery programs and/or high energy laser systems is desirable.
  • Customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • Must have working knowledge of Agile and Waterfall software development lifecycles with demonstrated SW development experience in both.
  • Must have experience with all phases of the software lifecycle from concept development to customer support of fielded systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance is required.
  • US Citizenship is required.
