What are the responsibilities and job description for the Campus Security Officer position at Germanna Community College?
Germanna is currently looking for a full time Campus Security Officer to maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides foot patrol and vehicle patrol of all college grounds and buildings
- Responds to emergency situations and notifies public safety authorities/leadership
- Documents information/patrol activity, conducts preliminary investigations of incident, complete factual written reports and provide factual testimony in court if needed
- Works closely with the internal and external departments regarding any student or employee issues and provides student and employee public safety escorts and assist various motorists on college property
- Monitors CCTV and alarm systems and respond to alerts
- Serves as crowd/traffic control at special events or during emergencies
- Maintains security controls for college keys; safeguards and controls issued college equipment
- Checks for irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations
- Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or public safety violators, approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies law enforcement as appropriate

- High School diploma or equivalent
- 18 years of age
- Valid Virginia driver’s License with clean driving history
- Successful completion of in-depth background investigation to include: reference checks, FBI fingerprint based criminal history check, degree validation, DMV (driving) record checks, license verification, drug screen, phycological and a medical examination
- Ability to remain calm and professional under stressful or emergency situations
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Public safety/security related experience and/or training
- Ability to work with others in a customer service team-oriented atmosphere
- Ability to read and understand college/department rules, regulations, policies and specific general orders and ability to follow and/or implement public safety/security policies and procedures
- Unquestionable honesty and integrity
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
- Problem solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to follow and give oral/written instructions, to react professionally in routine and emergency situations, to testify in court, conduct preliminary investigations, gather information, write factual reports, and to explain and ensure compliance with policies, rules, and regulations
- Demonstrated skills in the use of public safety/security vehicles, communication equipment, alarm systems, and other types of public safety/security equipment
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a campus security officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and if required, ability to obtain and maintain certification as a VCIN terminal operator as mandated by the Virginia State Police
- Ability to successfully complete and maintain required departmental training certifications (e.g. Clery, First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, REVIVE, Mental Health Response Awareness, Public Safety Communications, CIT, Trauma Informed Response, etc.)
- Current DCJS Certified Campus Security Officer
- Demonstrated basic skills in the operation of personal computers, records management systems, and understanding of NIMS/ICS
- First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
- NIMS/ICS 100c and 200 Certification
