Job Description

The Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with interest in health economics, health services research, and health policy, especially Medicaid policy.

The fellow will join the Postpartum Outcomes and Extension of Medicaid (POEM for Equity) team on a NIH funded causal inference study about the impact of post-pandemic policy changes in postpartum Medicaid coverage policy therein as well as the Center for Child Health Services Research Team on a range of NIH funded studies focused on provider and payer drivers and mediators of health disparities for children with chronic diseases.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have had some experience working with health administrative/insurance claims data and other large datasets. Prior experience with the Department of Health or other training with large data will be viewed favorably. While the position requires technical skills, we are also looking for a person passionate about improving quality, equity and value of care for women and children, and in growing as a member of our team.

The fellow is expected to increase their methodological knowledge in causal inference, longitudinal modeling, agent-based modeling, and mixed methods. Additionally, the fellow will build skills for designing and implementing applied research studies and have opportunities to either lead or co-author manuscript publications. Responsibilities will include processing large datasets, performing statistical analyses, developing models, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies.

Qualifications

The position offers a one-year postdoctoral fellowship with an ideal start-date of early 2025 and with the possibility for a second year with compensation commensurate with experience. The position includes an excellent benefits package and funds for travel to professional conferences and meetings. Individuals with the following characteristics will be competitive for the position: strong motivation and commitment to a career in women and children?s health, excellent communication and quantitative skills, ability to conduct self-directed and collaborative research.

Eligibility

PhD, DrPh, ScD, or equivalent degree in Health Economics, Health Policy, Epidemiology, Public Health, Statistics or other related quantitative disciplines.

Comprehensive understanding of statistical concepts and methods.

Proficiency in at least one programing language (e.g., R, SAS, STATA).

Excellent communication skills (both oral and writing) and analytical skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Strong interest in health equity research.

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in developing research designs, analytic plans, and communicating results
  • Develop programs, methodologies, and files for analyzing and presenting data
  • Import and clean raw datasets and evaluate data quality
  • Perform statistical analyses according to the study design (e.g., hierarchical modeling, survival analyses, weighted analyses, difference-in-difference, simulation, etc.)
  • Accurately and appropriately interpret and communicate results
  • Detect and address issues in data and analytic results
  • Clearly communicate processes used and results achieved, and suggest new and alternative approaches
  • Assist in writing and editing manuscripts for publication
  • Cultivate deep familiarity with methodological approaches and data

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $72500 - $80000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
