DESCRIPTION:
The Dance Instructor position reports directly to the Cultural Arts Supervisor, and will work under the guidance of the Performing Arts Coordinator as needed. A Dance Instructor instructs, explains, and demonstrates techniques and methods of dance with musical or rhythmic accompaniment to students of all ages in a variety of dance styles. This position may teach dance classes and workshops to students of all ages, and will assist with dance recitals and productions. This is a part-time position with hours that will vary by session, any where from 3-15 hours per week, and will include evening and weekend work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instructors are responsible for teaching a group of approximately 6-12 students per class
- Be a direct contact for parents and students involved in program during class time
- Instructors are required to participate in all special performances and programs
- Prepare a general lesson plan for each class with goals relating to the Studio Dance curriculum
- Be able to demonstrate techniques being taught, observe and correct dance students as they attempt to do it themselves, and offer suggestions to students on how to improve their dance techniques in a positive learning environment
- Provide a safe and enjoyable class environment for all participants
- Attend all required staff trainings and workshops
- Submit all correspondence and content, including but not limited to - newsletters, performance details, class requirements, shopping lists, etc. to Performing Arts Coordinator and/or Cultural Arts Supervisor, as defined, in a timely manner
- Work cooperatively with other cultural arts instructors and assistants, the Performing Arts Coordinator, and Cultural Arts Supervisor to meet department goals
- Complete and submit all necessary information and forms associated with the Studio Dance program including availability/schedules, contact information, lesson plans, song lyrics/choices, costume choices, sub requests, accident/incident reports, etc. in a timely fashion
- Know and uphold the Gurnee Park District Customer Service Standards (SOFIE)
- Read, understand and be familiar with the Gurnee Park District’s Personnel Policy Manual and Safety Manual
- Maintain good working relationships with fellow staff members, other departments, administrative personnel, community members and any other visitors to our facilities or programs
- Perform all other duties as assigned
- Additional responsibilities during Fall and Winter/Spring Performances and Recital Sessions:
- Choreograph dances for performances.
- Choose appropriate music for both the class and the recital.
- Choose appropriate costumes for the age of the students.
- Perform additional duties to successfully execute performance, as assigned, including but not limited to: assisting with photos, programs, check-ins, tickets, stage management, etc.
- Educates public concerning program purpose and philosophy of the Park District
- Possesses thorough understanding of Park District programming and events.
- Demonstrates effective leadership and personal relationships and encourages positive community relationships
- Develops rapport with program participants and parents
Hours and compensation:
- Hours will be varied by session and classes assigned
- Due to the nature of this position, evening and weekend hours are expected
- Compensation will be based on evaluation, experience, and recommendation of your Direct Supervisor with the approval of the Executive Director
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience: Individuals must be at least 16 years of age; ages 18 or older preferred. Must have received progressive dance instruction experience in a professional setting.
- Education: High School Diploma strongly preferred for youth programs. High school diploma required and advanced degree preferred for adult programs. Formal dance training and education with an emphasis in performance, arts, or like field preferred.
- Skills: Formal dance training and expertise in the area of dance they will be instructing. Must be able to work with children/youth/adults.
- Certifications: First Aid/CPR certification or ability to become certified within 6 months of employment.
- Competencies: Reliable, friendly, self-motivated, and must have extensive dance knowledge.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Your job may entail bending, kneeling, squatting or sitting when working your shift. Occasionally movement of market supplies will be necessary in which case the maximum weight that you are expected to be able to lift is 25 lbs., but generally it will be less.
