About the Program

The Summer Designer, Architecture role is part of the Nicholas E. Vlattas Summer Scholars Program established in 2003. The program brings students together from diverse academic backgrounds for hands-on engagement in an integrated design and professional practice environment.

 

Summer Designers are fully embedded within project teams, contributing to active work while gaining exposure to design exploration, technical documentation, construction administration, and project management. The role emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, and technical skill development across multiple phases of architectural practice, aligned with the Architectural Experience Program (AXP).

 

In addition to project work, Summer Scholars participate in enrichment opportunities such as 3D software workshops, hand rendering, marketing, the business of architecture, firm forums, design travel, and site tours of projects under construction. The program offers a unique opportunity to build professional confidence and develop an understanding of architecture grounded in meaningful connections to place and community.

 

Job Responsibilities

Project Practice

  • Collaborate and assist with interior design development, space planning, and documentation
  • Support the selection of furniture, fixtures, equipment and finishes 
  • Help produce drawings, diagrams, and presentation materials using CAD and 3D modeling tools (e.g., Rhino, SketchUp)
  • Update drawings and documents based on team direction
  • Explore social, environmental, and cultural factors that inform design decisions
  • Organize, maintain, and update project files and documentation

 

Design Documentation

  • Collaborate with architects, designers, and planners with design development and production
  • Assist in the designing, planning and administration of the construction of buildings and other projects for clients
  • Explore social, environmental, and cultural factors that inform design decisions
  • Develop and support the preparation of drawings, diagrams, models, and presentations
  • Organize, maintain, and update project files and documentation

Professional Engagement

  • Participate in firm-wide learning sessions, design reviews, lectures, and discussions including 3D software, hand rendering, marketing, and the business of architecture 
  • Attend site tours of projects under construction
  • Engage with mentors and team members to build professional skills and understanding of architectural practice
  • Participate in mentorship opportunities focused on design thinking, project teams, and career development
  • Collaborate with fellow Summer Scholars across offices and disciplines
  • Present experience and design work to peers and firm leadership
