Harmony Senior Services, a certified Great Place To Work and one the country’s fastest growing companies in the luxury senior living industry, is seeking an experienced Director of Payroll to join the team at its corporate office in Roanoke, VA. This position will be an 100% onsite position.
The Director of Payroll is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the organization’s payroll operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing for all employees. This role provides strategic direction, manages payroll systems and teams, ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and partners closely with Finance, HR, and Legal to support organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and develop the payroll team, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for salaried, hourly, and contingent employees across multiple locations and jurisdictions
- Ensure compliance with all applicable payroll, tax, wage and hour, and labor laws
- Establish and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Manage payroll audits, reconciliations, and reporting, including year-end activities (W-2s, 1099s, etc.)
- Partner with Finance on payroll accounting, accruals, general ledger postings, and cash forecasting
- Collaborate with HR on compensation changes, benefits deductions, timekeeping, and employee data management
- Evaluate, implement, and optimize payroll systems and third-party vendors
- Resolve complex payroll issues and employee escalations with professionalism and discretion
- Monitor payroll metrics and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Support mergers, acquisitions, and organizational growth initiatives as they relate to payroll
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- 8 years of progressive payroll experience, including 3 years in a leadership or director-level role
- Deep knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, and compliance requirements
- Experience managing multi-state and/or international payroll preferred
- Proficiency with Workday and strong Excel skills required
