Job Summary

The Unit Manager is responsible for assisting in the planning, organization, supervision, and evaluation of nursing services within their assigned unit. This role ensures quality resident care by assessing care needs and coordinating appropriate action, implementing nursing policies and procedures, and supervising staff. Additionally, the Unit Manager coordinates and monitors medical and medication services in accordance with each resident's care plan.

Expectations

  • Maintain a record of regular and predictable attendance.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Oversees daily work assignments of nursing staff.
    • Direct and coordinate staff work activities.
    • Reassigns staff to different areas as needed to meet community demands.
    • Conduct written performance evaluations for assigned staff.
    • Enforce community policies and administer progressive discipline when necessary.
    • Interviews potential applicants, as needed.
    • Handle employee, resident, and family complaints in a timely and effective manner.
    • Participates in training programs and assists with the orientation of new staff.
  • Analyze incident and accident investigation reports to determine causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Gather and provide necessary data for infection control, wound management, fall prevention, and other programs to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Participate in the admission process for new residents, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Provide support to MDS Coordinators.
  • Respond to emergency/disaster situations, reporting to designated areas to ensure calm and safe handling of residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Communicate effectively with residents and families regarding care plans, clinical updates, and resolution of concerns.
  • Pass medications and monitor residents for effectiveness of drug therapy and occurrence of adverse effects, as needed.
  • Accurately document medication administration and resident responses as necessary.
  • Provide treatments based on resident care plans.
  • Supervise staff, aiding with resident care and ensuring compliance with standards of practice.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of resident and community information.
  • Cooperate with residents, nursing staff, physicians, families, agencies, and service providers.
  • Ensure resident safety and observe infection control procedures.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation.
  • Willingness to work overtime, holidays, and weekends, as scheduled.
  • Share on-call responsibilities with other nursing leadership.
  • Participate in Care Conferences as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as directed by DON/ADON/Administrator.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Licensed RN or LPN in the State of Michigan.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a long-term care or assisted living setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Experience with care planning, medication administration, and resident assessments.
  • Familiarity with state and federal healthcare regulations related to nursing care and resident services.
  • Experience in managing teams, handling staff scheduling, and overseeing daily operations in a nursing unit.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with residents, staff, families, and visitors.
  • Excellent organizational skills to maintain and complete records and reports accurately.
  • Critical thinking skills, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey information.
  • Ability to use good judgment in assessing and handling problems, knowing when to involve supervisory staff, emergency services, or law enforcement when necessary.
  • Strong leadership abilities to guide and support the care team.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • CPR Certification required.
  • Must attend annual in-service updates and reviews.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to safely lift, transfer, and assist residents with ambulation.
