What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horticultural Internship position at Holland, City of (MI)?
Assist with grounds maintenance tasks, including weeding, pruning, and specialized garden care to Windmill Island Gardens' formal landscape. Research and development of a pre-approved project focusing on horticulture and the guest experience of the gardens. Participation in horticultural programming as requested.
- Under direction of the Grounds and Horticultural Manager and Horticultural Team members, undertake a variety of grounds maintenance tasks.
- Determines and implements specific horticultural projects pertinent to interest and benefitting the gardens, e.g. tree inventory or garden bed design.
- Occasional use of power equipment such as weed whippers, backpack blowers, and hedge trimmers.
- Engages with visitors in a hospitable and educational capacity.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Pursuit of education in horticulture, biology, or related field, with prior experience with horticultural work preferred.
- Ability to learn operation of maintenance equipment including lawnmowers, gators, power tools, manual tools, and trucks/trailers.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively work with a diverse group of visitors and co-workers.
- Physical ability to lift/push/pull/transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Work includes outside working conditions with exposure to hot and cold weather conditions.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be assigned.
