Job Summary:
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented IT Helpdesk Technician to join our in-house IT team for all our Ophthalmology locations. You will be the first point of contact for technical support issues, assisting staff with day-to-day computer, software, and network-related concerns. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone looking to gain experience in a healthcare technology environment
This role requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with users at all levels. The Helpdesk Technician will play a crucial role in ensuring smooth IT operations and enhancing user experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide first-level technical support via phone, email, and in-person
- Serve as first responder for user support: troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues.
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, printer, and network issues
- Support ophthalmic-specific clinical devices (EHR systems, imaging workstations, diagnostic equipment).
- Assist with onboarding of new staff and configuring workstations
- Support EHR (Electronic Health Records) and practice management systems
- Maintain IT documentation including user guides and network diagrams
- Assist with inventory tracking of IT equipment and peripherals
- Escalate complex issues to senior IT staff when necessary
- Participate in IT projects—rollouts, upgrades, backups, and security audits.
Have experience in eye exam machines and interfaces for Ophthalmology
Common Issues:
- Slow chart loading during high-volume clinic days
- Image integration failures from diagnostic equipment
- Template customization for ophthalmology-specific workflows
- DICOM viewer integration problems
Diagnostic Equipment IntegrationOptical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Manufacturers: Zeiss, Heidelberg, Topcon, Optovue
- Network connectivity issues: Check ethernet connections and IP configurations
- Image transfer failures: Verify DICOM settings and destination folders
- Software crashes: Update device drivers and restart imaging software
- Calibration errors: Schedule maintenance and verify environmental conditions
Fundus Cameras
Manufacturers: Canon, Nikon, Zeiss, CenterVue
- Color calibration problems: Check monitor settings and camera white balance
- USB/network connection drops: Verify cable integrity and network stability
- Storage space alerts: Implement automated archiving to network storage
Visual Field Analyzers
Manufacturers: Zeiss (Humphrey), Haag-Streit (Octopus)
- Patient data sync issues: Verify network connectivity to central database
- Printer configuration: Ensure proper driver installation for report printing
- Backup restoration: Maintain regular backups of test databases
Qualifications:
- Associate degree or IT certification required
- HL7, PAC’s sytems, Interface experience required
- Basic understanding of Windows OS, Microsoft Office, and networking fundamentals
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
- Willingness to learn healthcare-specific software and protocols
- Previous helpdesk or customer service experience a plus (but not required)
- Exposure to clinical/ophthalmic systems (e.g., EHR, imaging software) preferred.
- Certifications like CompTIA A , Network , or HIPAA training are a bonus.
Experience
- 1–3 years of IT support or helpdesk experience (healthcare or clinical environment a plus).
- Strong knowledge of computer hardware components and troubleshooting techniques.
- Experience with desktop support in a corporate environment is preferred.
- Ability to analyze technical problems systematically and provide effective solutions.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
