What are the responsibilities and job description for the Regulatory Development and Support Engineer position at Idaho National Laboratory?

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Regulatory Development and Support Engineer to work in our Regulatory Research department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

You will lead medium to large projects in a dispersed work team environment and perform tasks associated with current light water reactor and latest advanced reactor designs in developing regulatory frameworks that directly support on time and expanded deployment, including the frameworks established together with either the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or the Department of Energy (DOE).

Responsibilities Include

  • Direct and contribute to projects or significant tasks that may involve multidisciplinary activities in direct support of reactor owner-operators, reactor technology developers, the NRC, or DOE programs addressing reactor deployment and sustainability.
  • Solve complex or longstanding regulatory challenges, requiring you to develop broad-based and collaborative approaches to provide solutions which are innovative.
  • Work with industry partners, including the commercial sector, other parts of DOE’s national laboratory complex, the NRC, and DOE to regularly confirm that the approaches developed meet customer needs. Some travel and public speaking will be required.
  • Lead significant regulatory framework development projects or tasks and build teams across organizations, including participation in professional activities and external collaborations. Opportunities will exist to develop professional publications.
  • Proactively identify, promote, and develop new technical capabilities to develop and implement plans for new and significant project opportunities. This includes highlighting the department’s capabilities to potential new customers; foster relationships with the NRC and existing customers; serve in positions of visibility in professional organizations, conferences, and various non-government organizations.
  • You will report to the Department Manager.

Minimum Requirements

  • Level 3: Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering field plus 5 years relevant experience; or an Masters degree plus 2 years relevant experience; or a PhD plus 2 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Level 4: Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering field plus 9 years relevant experience; or an Master's degree plus 6 years relevant experience; or a PhD plus 4 years of relevant experience is required.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy L clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

  • Experience with the commercial nuclear industry, state and federal regulators, and technology researchers at DOE labs is preferred
  • Experience gained at operating nuclear facilities, including integrated plant safety systems operation and experience in NRC-licensee interactions, are a plus.
  • Regulatory experience with various types of reactors, including commercial nuclear power plant operations, advanced light water and non-light water reactor technologies, and test or research reactor facilities is strongly preferred.

Job Information

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288) / Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel,

bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. Dexterity sufficient to don and doff radioactive anticontamination garments, as well as use instrumentation to survey self and personal materials. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job

requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
