Description
Under the supervision of the Aquatics System Manger and the Aquatics Facility Supervisors. The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for creating, developing, and directing diversified aquatics programs for the North County and Gifford Aquatics Centers.
Supervision will be exercised over subordinate personnel, including fulltime, part-time, seasonal and volunteer staff. Participates and completes various related work as assigned including Programing, scheduling, and instructing.
In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Essential Job Duties
- Presents and facilitates aquatics programming at both aquatic centers. Coordinates programs and activities with other County departments, agencies, community organizations, and the public as appropriate.
- Serves as a liaison and resource for community agencies and other organizations; performs community outreach to promote aquatics programs and stimulate interest in aquatics offerings.
- Assists in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and staff training for aquatic programs.
- Recruitment and retention of swim instructors for programs.
- Open and close aquatics facilities according to schedule.
- Organizes promotes and conducts aquatics activities such as Swim lessons, Jr Lifeguard program, Aqua Fit, and Red Cross Classes, etc.
- Review and respond to customer concerns. Resolves conflicts regarding aquatic programs.
- Maintains accurate inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Provide program information to the public through the preparation and distribution marketing materials.
- Assists in the supervision of other aquatic staff members and volunteers.
- Assists in evaluating aquatic programs for effectiveness and value to the overall aquatic program.
- Ensures participant and staff adherence to all safety practices and codes of conduct.
- Meets and greets participants and answers any questions they may have about specific programs.
- Maintains accurate records of activities and attendance.
- Inspects facilities and equipment for repairs or replacement.
- Uses computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
Typical Requirements
Education / Experience :
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Parks and Recreation Management or related discipline;
minimum two years (2) experience in planning and directing community recreation activities. Excellent communication and public relations skills along with demonstrated competency in computer usage.
Strong desire to excel in the public park setting with strong organizational skills in planning and execution of programs and activities desired.
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations :
- American Red Cross lifeguard certification
- American Red Cross lifeguard IT certification preferred
- American Red Cross first aid certification
- American Red Cross CPR, AED, & O2
- Water Safety Instruction
- Water Safety Instruction Training preferred
- Water fitness certification
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) preferred
- Valid Driver's License
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills :
Knowledge of water rescue methods, CPR, and first aid techniques
Knowledge of park rules and regulations concerning public safety
Ability to plan, direct, and supervise the work of subordinate personnel to achieve maximum effectiveness and high morale
Ability to generate revenue through coordination of aquatic programs
Ability to stimulate and hold the interest of the participants
Ability to get along well with others
Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position;
creativity; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
