Job Title: Communications Specialist

Background: We are currently looking for a top-notch dynamic communications professional who is client-focused and can turn complex ideas into engaging content and help position IDB’s corporate narrative and priorities in the region to join our knowledge and learning team.

The team:

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social, and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean. It provides loans, grants, guarantees, policy advice, and technical assistance to the public and private sectors of its borrowing member countries.

The Knowledge, Innovation and Communication Sector (KIC), within the Vice-Presidency of Sectors and Knowledge (VPS) of the IDB, is responsible of: (i) helping the IDB Group to identify, build, apply, and disseminate high-quality knowledge, as well as to develop and use learning products that enable the building of technical and general competencies; (ii) promote an internal culture of innovation by providing experience, networks, and methodologies and expediting the adoption of innovative solutions; and (iii) expand the audience that uses the Bank’s products and position the brand through internal and external communication.

Within KIC, the Knowledge and Learning Division (KIC/KLD) provide Clients with guidance and tools to capture, generate, manage, and use knowledge, and support the planning and development of learning products.

The activities of the Division include:

Participates in the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the Bank's knowledge management and learning products and services.

Supports the knowledge flows within the Bank and works closely with business units to identify opportunities to capitalize on this knowledge.

Supports the capture of lessons learned from operational work and promotes their systematization, dissemination, and use.

Support the design and development of knowledge management solutions for specific business units, in response to requests channeled through the Client Relations Unit.

Liaises with other KIC divisions to ensure alignment of support and access to tools that promote knowledge flows.

Identifies potential knowledge and learning synergies both inside and outside the Bank, promoting partnerships aimed at connecting demand to the existing supply of knowledge.

Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the Bank's knowledge and learning services and products. Develops methods, approaches, and indicators needed for this purpose.


What you’ll do:

This role will provide day-to-day strategic advice and technical guidance in the implementation of internal and external communication strategy for KLD. The communications professional will work in collaboration with the Communications Division. This consultancy will provide guidance and support in the following areas and activities:

Project management and coordination:

  • Responsible for the design and execution of the communications strategy for KLD.

  • Work in coordination with KIC’s digital team to define and implement a communication strategy for KLD’s programs, products, and services.

  • Work alongside KIC’s digital team, to ensure proper alignment with the sector’s communication strategy, to develop a narrative for knowledge and learning and how it supports IDB’s work in the Region.

Planning:

  • Provide strategic recommendations regarding communication decisions within the Division.

  • Coordinate and develop overarching communication strategy for knowledge products and specific action plans for the various initiatives of the area.

  • Develop and produce dissemination toolkits for products and services such as: BIDAcademy, Superheroes of Development award and platform, lessons learned dashboards, knowledge sharing events for the Region, courses, open knowledge products, Findit, etc.

  • Coordinate the design and implementation of communication products (blogs, videos, photos, website, communities of practice, social networks, marketing products, etc.) including digital campaigns.

  • Supervise and monitor the work of external vendors related to communication and design services.

  • Expand KLD relationships with communicators throughout the organization.

Execution and content management:

  • Transform complex concepts into clear, meaningful, and influential communications.

  • Develop core messages and outline, draft, translate and edit speeches, presentations, articles, opinion pieces, video scripts, talking points, presentations, and other materials.

  • Research, collect and validate content to be used for all speeches, talking points, and others.

  • Write, translate, and edit internal communications materials as needed.

  • Proofread/Edit documents in English and Spanish.

  • Guide the day-to-day management of KIC intranet to disseminate products and services of the area.

  • Create briefs for campaigns, press releases and Op-eds and others in close coordination with the Communications Division.

  • Coordinate the design and organization of internal and external events for the Division/Unit.

  • Coordinate communication activities of the Division/Unit as requested.

  • Provide training to the Division/Unit team on strategic communications and its role in the positioning of the Sector agenda (in terms of the planning process, audiences, channels, etc.).

Analytics and evaluation: Analyze current metrics and offer new alternatives beyond subscriptions and downloads to measure communication efforts on KLD’s areas of work.

What you’ll need:

Citizenship:

You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.

Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Education: Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Business Administration, Public Policy, or other related fields.

Experience:

Minimum of five years of experience in public relations, journalism, corporate communications, or marketing roles, particularly in multilateral organizations. Experience in managing multiple initiatives, working with cross-functional teams and proven analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience in journalism, digital marketing, and project management, good management of computer applications for editing images, graphics, and texts, in addition to knowledge management of digital marketing tools are a plus.

Languages: Fluency (oral and written) in both English and Spanish. Outstanding presentation and copywriting and editing skills in both, English, and Spanish.

Flexibility: Occasionally, extended hours for a special project or event will be required for this position.

Skills

Proven experience as a superior copywriter and editor. This entails writing clear and compelling copy for different audiences and in various formats. Communicating in multilaterals, knowledge management, innovation for development is a plus.

Ability to think strategically and move fast and effectively to the execution phase.

Press operations, media relations, and crisis communications experience.

Ample understanding of the political, cultural, and social issues in the region.

Innovative, creative, and continuous improvement mindset.

Outstanding interpersonal, and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize and juggle a heavy volume of diverse projects.

Experience working in cross-functional teams, across countries, engaging with corporate, regional, and local offices.

Excellent problem-solving and project management skills; ability to navigate complex environments and adapt to change.

Ability to build trust-based relationships with colleagues, internal and external stakeholders.

Proven experience partnering in matrixed teams and connecting to country offices.
