WHAT YOU WILL DO: *The billing assistant is responsible for performing data entry and ensuring timely completion of all billing and reimbursement functions for clients in the Recovery and Wellness (RWC) Programs seeking substance use disorder (SUD) treatment within the Drug Medi-cal Organized Delivery (DMC-ODS) System of Care. In addition, the billing assistant will be providing clerical support to staff and is responsible for answering phones, filing and faxing authorization documents to Optum Health for client treatment approval. The position also works to compile, process and maintain medical records of RWC clients in a manner consistent with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements as set forth by the California Department of Healthcare Services (DHCS) Drug Medi-cal requirements client system of care.
- Answers incoming calls and handles inquiries in a professional and supportive manner
- Verifies and checks client Medi-cal insurance monthly to monitor Share of Cost (SOC) and benefit eligibility for each month of service
- Opens client episodes into the San Diego Web Infrastructure for Treatment Services (SanWITS) to allow billing for DMC services
- Enters discharge and closing episode data into SanWITS
- Enters all client data collection into the California Outcomes Measurement System Treatment (CalOMS Tx) as required by the DHCS
- Sends client SUD treatment authorizations to Optum Health and monitors treatment approval
- Attends county meetings to obtain the most current information on DMC billing and data entry requirements
- Operates office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voicemail systems and personal computers
- Protects the security of medical records and client information to ensure that confidentiality is protected as required by State and Federal (42 CFR) regulations
- Provides administrative support to all staff and programs as requested
- Participates in staff meetings and trainings
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor

EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION*
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- 6 months of relevant experience required
- Medi-Cal billing experience preferred
- Experience in billing with the SD County Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System preferred
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
