Transfer Station Operator

Position Overview

This position moves and transfers all disposables delivered to the center, ensuring that all applicable regulations and policies are followed. Grade 17

Duties and Responsibilities

• Identifies, pushes, and packs trash, construction, and debris. Identifies and removes all items not allowed.
• Ensures that trailers are properly positioned.
• Identifies, loads, and ensures that all recyclables are properly transferred.
• Cleans chutes and other facilities.
• Interfaces with and advises the public regarding materials allowed. Addresses public inquiries and concerns.
• Assists with the operation of the scale house.
• Loads mulch for customers.
• Operates heavy equipment.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications: Possession of a valid, State of North Carolina driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Must possess Public Safety Certification. Must possess Transfer Station Operator Certification.

• Knowledge of County and departmental policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
• Knowledge safe working practices.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in using small office equipment, such as computers, telephones, copiers, and facsimile machines.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment, to include backhoes, tractors, and dump trucks.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
• Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to make timely and sound decisions.
• Ability to adhere to all established safety standards and ensure such standards are not violated.
• Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, members of the general public and other groups involved in the activities of the County as they relate to the department.
