A rodman is responsible for the transportation and set up of the instruments and equipment associated with professional surveying land and preparing the job site for a survey. The Survey Rodman will be responsible for supporting the Survey Party Chief during the measurement of land and grade.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Party Chief gives direction for this position.
- Load vehicle before heading out to job site.
- Transport and set up instruments and equipment needed and preparing job site for survey.
- Clear brush and trees away from survey line.
- Hold the prism pole to determine elevation at different points along the job site.
- Read a survey grade level.
- Take level notes and draw sketches, as needed.
- Perform basic calculations.
- Upload/download data to and from a data collector, as needed.
- Maintain field equipment.
- Stock survey truck with supplies and maintain inventory.
- Weekly truck maintenance (wash, check oil, etc.)

- Continuously exposed to the elements of the outdoors which includes but not limited to, weather, wildlife, vegetation, water, and rough terrain.
- Stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Continuously required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, etc.
- Perform manual labor such as raking, shoveling, chopping, hammering, etc.
- Frequently required to sit as the position requires drive time in a vehicle.
- Frequently required to reach above and use hands.
- Frequently required to push and pull objects.
- Frequently required to lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Agility to climb ladders.
- Required to follow all safety requirements in construction sites.
- Required to meet and/or pass all site-specific requirements by clients, such as background checks.
- Must be able to work weekends, if needed.
- Must be able to travel, if needed.
- Must be able to swim.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency
Valid driver’s license
Experience in professional land surveying field is helpful and preferred, but on-the-job training can be provided.
