Summary
Under general supervision of the North-East Branch Manager, directs staff and workflow on evenings and weekends, provides readers advisory service to patrons, provides circulation account management and fine payment services.
Basic Information
- Reports to the North-East Branch Manager.
- 24 hours per week.
- $20.05 per hour.
- Position open until filled.
Schedule
Monday - 4 pm - 8 pm
Tuesday - 4 pm - 8 pm
Wednesday - 4:30 pm - 8 pm
Saturday - 8:30 am - 5 pm
Sunday - 12:30 pm - 5 pm

Job Duties (Essential Functions)
- Serves as primary building supervisor on weekends and evenings.
- Communicates with staff and manager.
- Communicates with contract security to assure the building opens and closes, and patron behavior issues are appropriately handled.
- Communicates with facilities and meeting room services staff to assure meeting spaces are adequately prepared for use.
- Directs staff to assure efficient and effective customer service.
- Directs staff to assure service points are covered and staff receive appropriate breaks.
- Provides effective reader’s advisory services for all patrons.
- Provides basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; collects fines and charges; updates customer records in the computer; verbally explains circulation policies and procedures; makes other computer inquiries; and processes patron requests for reserve items.
- Maintains book displays.
- Keeps abreast of current library resources, trends, and developments in profession.
- Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.
- As this branch is a designated United States Village Post Office, this position assists with Village Post Office duties including selling stamps, organizing postal supplies and answering questions related to postal services.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with customers of all ages.
- Demonstrated ability to be a team player.
- Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures.
- Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Demonstrated experience directing staff and workflow.
- Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles.
- Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level. Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
- Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.
- Many duties performed while standing and bending; ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
- Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. or equivalent combination of education, relevant work experience, and life experience.
- 3 or more years of Library or Customer Service experience preferred.
Work Environment
Work is performed at the North-East Library Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
