Starting Salary: $67,699.63

A Research Attorney I position is available in the chambers of Judge Jacy J. Hurst in Topeka, KS, with remote work possibilities available.

Job Duties: The Research Attorney I must perform all activities in a respectful, organized, timely, and confidential manner. The Research Attorney I is required to read and review legal briefs and other records submitted on appeal—including prior filings, trial transcripts, trial exhibits, and the like—and conduct legal research on a broad range of civil and criminal legal issues. The successful candidate must conduct thorough legal research, analyze complex issues, apply legal research to unique facts, produce quality written prehearing bench memoranda for the Judge, draft and proofread orders and opinions, conduct complete legal citation verifications, assist in courtroom proceedings, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Staff in Judge Hurst’s chambers are expected to work cooperatively and respectfully with each other, court personnel, attorneys, and members of the community with whom they come into contact as part of their professional duties.

The successful applicant must quickly and thoroughly read, analyze, and comprehend complex legal issues and independently produce complete and accurate written work product with little supervision.

Employment Dates: This position is a 1- to 2-year term—approximately August 11, 2025, through August 6, 2026/2027.

Required Education and Experience: All candidates must have graduated from an ABA Accredited law school by June 2025. Although not required, preference may be given to applicants with a GPA ranked in the top one-third of their graduating class. All candidates must be eligible to practice law in Kansas before employment. Preference may be given to candidates who are currently licensed to practice law in Kansas OR who have a Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) result transferrable to Kansas per Supreme Court Rule 717.

Applicants who have not yet passed the Kansas Bar or received a qualifying UBE are eligible to apply, but they must complete the following before employment: (1) apply to take the Kansas Bar Exam or apply to transfer their UBE score to Kansas; (2) submit proof they successfully completed the MPRE and the character and fitness evaluation in Kansas; and (3) obtain a Kansas temporary permit to practice law.
