Landfill Mechanic

General Position Summary

Operates and maintains light to heavy trucks and equipment to perform a variety of tasks associated with Landfill maintenance.

Essential Functions

The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

Operates a front-end loader in moving solid waste and other materials; operates a grader or dozer in the moving or grading of a variety of materials, including snow removal; operates a backhoe to excavate and back fill trenches; operates a compactor to compact solid waste.
Operates snow removal equipment to remove snow from landfill area; drives transport trucks.
Performs maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment. 
Loads and transports equipment to various outlying landfills on low-boy trailers.
Provide hand tools needed to complete assigned duties.

Education, Certification, & Experience

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CPR Certification

First Aid Certified

Oregon Commercial Driver's License, Class A

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Work Schedule

The normal work schedule is 8 hours per day 5 days per week; exact schedules are assigned by management. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work.  Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.  Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.

Salary : $20 - $22
