LAYC/MMYC’s mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve that mission, LAYC/MMYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 5,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood. LAYC/MMYC also conducts advocacy and public policy work to broaden opportunities for youth.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This part-time, 30-hour Americorps role will assist a full-time after school site supervisor with programmatic and administrative work. The Americorps member in this role
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build mentoring relationships with youth in an out-of-school time setting.
- Provide highly focused academic tutoring.
- Facilitate enrichment activities according to age-appropriate curriculum and based on your interests of sports, art, dance, cooking, etc.
- Participate in trainings and certifications on critical aspects of youth development.
- Provide case management support to our youth and families.
- Receive hands-on supervision to guide you through your learning process.
- Learn how to collect accurate data to track the effectiveness of our program.
- As a team, members complete a minimum of 6 service projects.
- As a team, members help recruit 125 volunteers for their service projects.
- Members participate in one to two trainings a month on a Friday from 10 am – 6 pm.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must be over 17 years of age or 17 and with parental consent form.
- Have completed a high school diploma or equivalent OR sign a legally binding contract committing to obtaining a high school diploma or equivalent before the end of contract.
- Clearances - Required to complete MPD, FBI, State of residence (if not Washington DC) and the National Sex Offender Registry.
- US Citizen, foreign national, or lawful permanent resident.
- Mature, responsible, and reliable.
- Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills.
- Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
- Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
NOTE: LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
