What are the responsibilities and job description for the PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER position at Lorain County Health & Dentistry?
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMH-NP) provide compassionate, supportive, patient focused psychiatric treatment to adolescents and adults in an outpatient setting per an integrated model of care for patients of Lorain County Health & Dentistry (LCH&D). The PHM-NP is expected to work in collaboration with LCH&D primary care providers (including those who provide Medication Assisted Treatment), behavioral health providers, and other LCH&D staff. The PMH-NP will refer to external providers and treatment facilities, as appropriate, when patient needs exceed LCH&D services. At LCH&D, in the spirit of teamwork, the PMH-NP is expected to respond timely to consultative requests, or other requests for input and expertise, from primary care or behavioral health providers. From time to time, the PHM-NP may be requested to conduct administrative chart reviews, during work time, of psychotropic prescribing practices among primary care providers for development purposes.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Masters of Science in Nursing with Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Certification required.
- Must be board certified in area of practice.
- Must have BLS certification.
- Must hold an active DEA Licensure.
- Must be licensed in the State of Ohio and meet all requirements for credentialing and privileging.
- Must maintain appropriate continuing education requirements as established by State Board of Medical Examiners.
SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of one year of experience in a non-profit community healthcare or outpatient environment is preferred.
- Must have proficient computer skills and the ability to become proficient in software programs specific to Lorain County Health & Dentistry i.e. NextGen, EPM, EHR, etc.
- Must have the skill and credibility to serve as a patient advocate and be a role model for change.
- Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor and communicate enthusiastically with patients.
- Ability to be responsive in working with a culturally-diverse patient population.
- Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to master a therapeutic communication approach.
- Ability to independently coordinate multiple tasks.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Must have valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
- Bilingual Spanish speaking is a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Fine and gross motor skills will be frequently employed.
- Some lifting of supplies and equipment up to 50 lbs.
- 75% walking or standing, 25% sitting at a desk.
- Category I re: exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Daily responsibilities include:
- Review patient’s medical history.
- Elicit relevant information from patient regarding current and prior psychiatric conditions.
- Elicit relevant information from patient regarding their lifestyle and behavior.
- Elicit relevant information regarding family medical and mental health history.
- Perform psychiatric evaluation and routine checkups and screenings.
- Prescribe, direct, and/or administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, behavioral, or substance use disorders.
- Monitor medication management of patients evaluated and referred by the Behavioral Health Team.
- Provide appropriate psychiatric treatment to adolescents and adults.
- Collaborate with the legal guardian of minors
- Monitor and teach patients the use of medications according to best practices.
- Refer patients to specialty care if needed for complex medical conditions.
- Provides psychiatric information and collaborates with primary care providers.
- Collaborate appropriately with providers and behavioral health team.
- Participate in Peer Review.
