Job Description

Loudoun County Family Services is seeking a dedicated, professional candidate for the Child Protective Services Trainer position. The successful candidate will join the Department of Family Services (DFS) which envisions better health, safety, and well-being for all and supports individuals and families in the community to live their best lives while advocating for those most vulnerable and respecting their right to self-determination.

This trainer position is responsible for designing and facilitating course materials to develop and enhance the professional skills and performance of new and seasoned staff in the Child Protective Services (CPS) program. Successful candidates will demonstrate their knowledge of best and evidence-based approaches, practices and tools; policies and procedures; and theoretical and methodological frameworks in the human services field. Facilitated trainings must meet the various adult learning styles to occur either in-person, or virtually asynchronously, synchronously, or hybrid asynchronously/synchronously. This position creates and maintains a continuous supportive learning culture that inspires interpersonal and professional development and encourages productivity and teamwork. Under the direction of the CPS Program Manager, this position trains new and current staff to achieve program outcomes.

This work is multifaceted, as outlined in its core responsibilities:

  • Identifying and preparing materials for facilitation and training, in consultation with the CPS Program Manager, DFS, and County Department of Human Resources, and the supervisory team.
  • Training, mentoring, and supporting newly hired staff.
  • Assisting with the development of interns.
  • Evaluating the demonstrated proficiencies of newly hired staff and consulting with assigned supervisor relative to readiness to assume casework responsibilities.
  • Conducting formal needs assessments to identify and develop future trainings based on legislative, federal, state, and local policy changes.
  • Training all staff on new or revised policies, procedure, and topics, as directed.
  • Providing trainings to community partners about services as directed.
  • Developing and submitting training proposals to the CPS Program Manager.
  • Developing a training resource library of books, digital resources, journals, and articles that support development. Identifying and sharing pertinent training opportunities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Experience training a diverse workforce performing in a public sector human services organization with diverse programs and client populations.
  • Experience evaluating training outcomes.
  • Capacity to contribute to meaningful dialogue to influence learning and development.
  • Cultural awareness and humility to effectively train a diverse workforce.
  • General knowledge of the human services system with specialized knowledge and experience in at least one (1) program area related to protective services.
  • Knowledge of human behavior, individual and family theories and practices.
  • Knowledge of the family services system of care philosophy and values.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based approaches, practices, and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of government structure, operation, and regulatory functions.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written with the ability to reach a variety of audiences.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals in a diversity of roles, such as families, colleagues, agencies, vendors, consultants and state and local government officials.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively to address crises and resolve problems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field; two (2) years of related work experience in a social service or child/adult welfare agency; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

Master's level training in social work, psychology, sociology, or directly related field.

Special Requirements

  • Must be available for duty beyond normal workday which includes nights, weekends, and holidays, as required to perform functions of the position.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and will require reporting to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency (e.g., weather, transportation, disaster).
  • May be required to work and may be assigned to an alternate worksite(s) to carry out duties that support operational needs. Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.
  • Successful candidates will respond to community crisis as directed.

Post Conditional Offer Contingencies

Pass pre-employment background checks to include criminal, credit, CPS/APS, and DMV. Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Hold or obtain certifications such as CPR if required for assigned position. Obtain specific training such as CPS/Foster Care/APS state training as required or desired for assigned area.
