What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development Intern position at Lyric Opera of Chicago?

REPORTS TO: Vice President, Development 

Through artistic excellence coupled with innovative, relevant programming; initiatives to connect with and grow new audiences; engagement with communities to ignite creativity across Chicago; and a modernized Opera House that is the setting for truly great experiences, Lyric is leading the advancement of opera. The Development Intern will work closely with the Leadership Giving team, assisting with important research projects for Corporate & Foundation support, performing administrative work for the department, and learn about front-line fundraising strategies. In addition, the Development Intern will gain a basic understanding of arts administration. Learn about the various aspects of a development department, receive mentorship from team members and participate in essential administrative projects ranging from prospecting, researching corporate and foundation donors, assisting with mailings, preparations for events, electronic and hard copy document filing, and data entry.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Research corporate donor prospects and grant opportunities for funding.
  • Assist in preparing stewardship events for critical board leadership and committees.
  • Assist with direct mail pieces, including proofing, editing, and distribution.
  • Utilize Tessitura, our Customer Relationships Management System (CRM), for data entry assignments.
  • Perform general clerical duties (filing, copying, mailing) as needed.
  • Additional projects specific to each Development area as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • Pursuing a degree in nonprofit administration or a related field and considering a career in fundraising.
  • Candidates must have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Projects require prioritizing and efficiently managing tasks while ensuring the timely completion of necessary tasks. 
  • Ideal candidates will have a strong work ethic with sensitivity to confidential information and the ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) is also necessary.
  • Proficient with Google Suite and comfortable with data entry.

WORK CONDITIONS: 

  • Sitting for extended periods. 
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard mouse and to handle other office equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally oversee evening or weekend functions, deployments, or performances. 
  • Fast-paced and demanding environment. 
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.
