What are the responsibilities and job description for the Park Ranger position at Madison, City of (WI)?

The City of Madison Parks Division is looking for an individual who is passionate about the natural environment and public service. This is a skilled position responsible for representing the Madison Parks Division and the City of Madison in direct contact with the community often requiring independent judgment in difficult situations. Areas of responsibility include the following:

  • Customer service
  • Cash handling
  • Providing visitor services
  • Parks rules and city ordinance enforcement
  • Routine custodial and maintenance
  • Coordination of seasonal staff
  • Community outreach
Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Recreation Services Coordinator and Lead Park Ranger. This position involves direct resident contact, requiring the ability to work through conflict and emotional encounters with empathy and discretion while maintaining personal and public safety.
 
This position works approximately 40 hours per week throughout the year and may work rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Enforcement
  • Maintain an accurate log of contacts and actions taken, complete assigned associated reports.
  • Follow established procedures for issuance of citations for parking, permit and ordinance violations.
  • Clear and secure park facilities each night as directed.
  • Enforce, compile and administrate Parks Behavioral Policy.
  • Control Park incident scenes as assigned to ensure that first responders are notified, all necessary information is obtained and all required reports are completed.
  • Testify regarding issuance of citations as required.
Customer service
  • Provide visitor services to park users; answer questions and provide routine customer assistance and information to park users.
  • Support shelter rentals and Park reservations with facility services, shelter cleaning and resolving user conflicts as needed.
  • Support winter shelter operations.
  • Assist with volunteers and programming.
  • Collect fees as needed.
Park Maintenance
  • Remove brush and pick up litter, empty trash and perform minor repairs.
  • Identify/report situations requiring corrective actions beyond your means.
  • Follow pre-established procedures in preparing reports, updating kiosks, general cleaning, posting of signs and customer follow-up as directed.
  • Clear snow from dog parks and winter shelter areas.
Administration
  • Coordinate, train, and facilitate seasonal staff.
  • Monitor stock of supplies, clean, stock and organize Park Ranger vehicles.
  • Act as shift lead for Park Ranger staff as assigned.
  • Review protocol manuals and standard operating procedures as assigned.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • One (1) year of experience in customer service, security, or code enforcement with diverse public contact.
-OR-
  • Associate's degree or 2 year certificate or higher in a related field such as Criminal Justice, Natural Resources, or Recreation Management may be substituted for the experience requirements.
If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:

Two (2) years of experience applying the following:
  • Principles of situational awareness, to calmly handle difficult situations while maintaining personal safety.
  • Basic business practices related customer service and occasional cash handling.
  • Facility maintenance principles, equipment and techniques.
  • Computers and computer software applicable to the duties of the position (Microsoft Office and Sharepoint).
  • Radio communication principles.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a law enforcement background check including fingerprinting.
  • Candidates must meet criteria for Time system basic certification.
  • Work is performed in all types of weather, over varied terrain, and frequently involves varied hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Physical Requirements:
  • Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (bags of salt or trash barrels) and must be capable of lifting heavier objects with another employee.
  • This position requires a high percentage of work outdoors in all types of weather while walking and standing.
  • Work may involve walking over uneven surfaces, reaching, climbing, kneeling, and stooping.
  • Employees must be able to frequently bend, twist, squat and reach for extended periods of time.

Salary : $54,433
