What are the responsibilities and job description for the After School Site Director position at Martinsville-Henry County Family YMCA?

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures that the planning, preparing, and implementing of weekly lesson plans and program activities is done by site staff.
  • Nurtures children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families.
  • Adhere to all VDSS Standards for Licensed Child Care; including that all aspects of the site meet all licensing requirements.
  • Maintain current files on all children and staff.
  • Set-up and develop an age appropriate after school setting designed to promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Coordinates with the necessary school personnel on site specific details such as but not limited to site space, arrivals, departures, and absences.
  • Ensure proper communication with all site staff regarding job duties, situations relating to children, etc....
  • Assists Child Care Director in meeting all Health Department, Social Services, Fire Codes and HEPA Standards.
  • Establish an emergency procedure for individual sites and to educate all staff and children about these procedures.
  • Model’s appropriate interactions with children, including but not limited to, reporting incidents using facts only, redirecting behavior and teaching problem-solving skills.
  • Supervise all site staff to ensure that they are meeting job requirements and hold them accountable for their actions.
  • Supervises the children, classroom, and all activities to meet the Virginia Department of Social Services Licensed Child Care Program Standards as well as the YMCA Code of Conduct.
  • Follows risk-management policies and procedures to always maintain a safe environment.
  • Assist other staff as necessary to ensure a safe and productive environment.
  • Always maintains a positive and professional attitude.
  • Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Cultivates positive relationships, conducts parent conferences, and maintains effective communication with parents. Engages parents as volunteers and connects them to the YMCA.
  • Maintains program site and equipment.
  • Maintains required program records; attendance records, USDA records, behavior issues, first-aid records, emergency medical information on each child. Site staff hours worked and site expenses.
  • Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, weekly site director meetings, monthly staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Assists with general housekeeping duties to ensure a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Displays an accepting attitude and willingness to work with diverse family structures, ethnicities, languages, abilities, socioeconomic groups, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Program directors shall be at least 21 years of age and shall meet one of the following:

1. A graduate degree in child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from college or university and six months of programmatic experience

2. An endorsement or bachelor’s degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and one year of programmatic experience.

3. 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours of college credit from a college or university of which 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours are in child-related subjects and one year of programmatic experience.

4. Two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity and at least one of the following education backgrounds:

a. A one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours.

b. A child development credential that requires:

  • i. High school program completion or the equivalent
  • ii.480 hours working with children in a group which could include a supervised practicum
  • iii. Determination of competency in promoting children’s development, providing a safe and heathy environment, managing the classroom environment or childhood program, and promoting positive and productive relationships with parents or guardians; and
  • iv. At least 120 hours of child-related training taught by an individual or by an organization with expertise in early childhood teacher preparation provided that the training facilitator:
  • Documents the student’s mastery and competence.
  • Observes the student’s application of competence in a classroom setting.
  • Has a combination of at least six years of education (leading to a degree or credential in a child-related field) or programmatic experience; and
  • Has at least 12 semester hours or 180 hours in a child-related field, a child development credential or equivalent, and two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity; or

c. A certification of qualification from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization.

· Must complete the following trainings within 30 days of hire:

· CPR, First Aid & AED Certifications

· Virginia Preservice Training (10hr on-line course required by DSS)

  • Must complete and pass a TB Test, background screenings from the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Social Services Child Protective Services prior to the first day on the job; all required background qualifications must be paid for by the potential employee and will be reimbursed only after the employee completes their 90 probationary period.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

  • Ability to stand for up to 45 minutes without having to sit down.
  • Ability to get up and down from a seated position on the floor.
