After School Teacher

Essential Functions:

• Assist in the planning, preparing and implementing of weekly lesson plans and program activities
• Nurtures children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families.
• Model’s appropriate interactions with children, including but not limited to, reporting incidents using facts only, redirecting behavior and teaching problem-solving skills.
• Assists in supervising the children, classroom and all activities to meet the Virginia Department of Social Services Licensed Child Care Program Standards as well as the YMCA Code of Conduct; Aides are not permitted to supervise groups of children alone, they must always have a Program Leader or Site Director with them.
• Follows risk-management policies and procedures to always maintain a safe environment.
• Assists other staff as necessary to ensure a safe and productive environment.
• Always maintains a positive and professional attitude.
• Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
• Cultivates positive relationships, conducts parent conferences, and maintains effective communication with parents. Engages parents as volunteers and connects them to the YMCA.
• Maintains program site and equipment.
• Maintains required program records.
• Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
• Assists with general housekeeping duties to ensure a clean and sanitary environment
• Displays an accepting attitude and willingness to work with diverse family structures, ethnicities, languages, abilities, socioeconomic groups, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Meets education and experience qualifications established by state law:
• o Must be at least 18 years of age
• o Meet one of the Program Director Qualifications listed in the VDSS Standards
• o Have a bachelor’s degree in a child-related field
• o Have 3 months of programmatic experience and at least one of the following:
• 1. A 1 yr. early childhood certificate from a college/university consisting of a min of 30 semester hrs.
• 2. A child development credential by an organization listed in the Code of Virginia
• 3. A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization; or
• o Have 6 months of programmatic experience
• Must complete the following trainings within 30 days of hire:
• 1. CPR, First Aid & AED Certifications
• 2. Virginia Preservice Training (10hr on-line course required by DSS)
• Must complete and pass a TB Test, background screenings from the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Social Services Child Protective Services prior to the first day on the job; all required background qualifications must be paid for by the potential employee and will be reimbursed only after the employee completes their 90 probationary period.
• Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
• Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
• Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
