Position: Attorney - Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
MALS seeks a dedicated and passionate Attorney to provide high-quality civil legal representation to low-income and elderly clients through our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic funded by the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), an independent organization within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) designed to ensure that every taxpayer is treated fairly and knows and understands their rights.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and advancing justice for underserved communities and will have a background in tax law or a willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct client interviews, case evaluations, and legal research for individuals seeking representation in disputes with the IRS.
- Represent low income taxpayers in disputes with the IRS and in proceedings before the United States Tax Court.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with other LITC Programs throughout the country.
- Conduct outreach and education targeted toward underrepresented taxpayer populations.
- Comply with all grant conditions and reporting requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Tennessee or immediate eligibility for admission by reciprocity.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with clients from underrepresented backgrounds.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc.
- Previous legal aid or public interest law experience is preferred but not required.
- An undergraduate and/or graduate degree in tax or accounting is preferred but not required.
