Job Summary


MCC is currently seeking two Instructional Deans to provide leadership and vision for academic programs, faculty, staff, and academic support within the assigned division. One Dean will oversee the Math and Science areas while the other Dean will oversee Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. As part of the senior academic leadership team, the Dean guides strategic planning; supports faculty hiring, development, and evaluation; advances assessment and program review; ensures compliance with accreditation requirements; and collaborates across the college to foster student learning, retention, and completion.

The Dean works collaboratively with academic and student affairs colleagues, department chairs, faculty, and staff; supports community and industry partnerships; and ensures alignment with MCC’s mission, values, and strategic goals. The ideal candidate is an experienced academic leader who demonstrates exemplary communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Essential Functions


40% – Strategic Leadership & Academic Planning

  • Leads academic programs, academic student support programs, and instructional initiatives in a shared governance environment
  • Guides evidence-based decision-making aligned with college and district strategic priorities
  • Leads an academic leadership team comprised of department chairs within the dean’s supervisory area
  • Collaborates with academic and student affairs administrators, faculty, staff, and community partners to promote college initiatives
  • Collaborates with partners to develop and promote higher education pathways, including dual enrollment and university transfer
  • Addresses conflict involving faculty, staff, or students through timely, policy-guided resolution
  • Advances college-wide initiatives related to teaching excellence and student success
  • May be assigned supervision of a programmatic area that serves all of academic affairs, such as the Honors Program, the center for Civic and Community Engagement, or the Learning Enhancement Center

40% – Instructional Quality, Faculty Support & Accreditation

  • Supports the recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and retention of faculty
  • Promotes faculty professional development and instructional innovation
  • Oversees program review, assessment of student learning, and curricular development
  • Ensures compliance with institutional and programmatic accreditation requirements

20% – Administrative Leadership & Operations

  • Oversees budget planning and resource allocation
  • Supports schedule development and enrollment management strategies
  • Participates in college councils, district committees, and community engagement efforts
  • Leads special projects and ensures compliance with district, state, and federal regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications


Master's Degree in a teaching field related to area(s) of assignment and four years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education and three years of teaching that includes curriculum/coursework development.

Examples of academic leadership/supervisory experience includes: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance.

No degree equivalency.


Teaching fields related to the Dean of Math & Science position: Master’s degree in a math, natural science, physical science, life science, engineering, or closely related field

Teaching fields related to the Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences: Master’s degree in a social sciences, humanities, arts, communication, or related liberal arts field

Desired Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree in a recognized academic field of study from an accredited institution.
  • Higher education teaching experience, preferably in community colleges.
  • Experience serving as a dean, department chair, program director, or equivalent academic leadership role.
  • Experience providing leadership for multiple departments in a complex system, such as a multi-campus college or multi-college system
  • Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based decision making and data-informed academic planning.
  • Experience in leading student success initiatives
  • Experience with accreditation, program review, and assessment of student learning.

Special Working Conditions

  • This position requires considerable work schedule flexibility as there are special events, activities, and issues requiring evening and weekend hours.
  • Summer hours vary.
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to any MCCCD locations
  • Travel to campus during the interview/selection process may be at the candidate’s own expense.
  • The position is not allocated for relocation expenses.
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas
