Learning and Interpretation Mission Statement

The Department of Learning and Interpretation (L&I) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, engages diverse audiences through original works of art, and builds relationships of trust with all communities in Houston.

What is Object-Based Learning (OBL)?

The Object-based learning team in Learning and Interpretation engages audiences from PreK- University. OBL at MFAH promotes in-depth investigations with original works of art through communal constructs of knowledge. These dialogues and experiences invite active participation.

Position Overview:

The Teaching Artist will help plan and lead sections of rehearsal and provide support/guidance for the performance development process. This will include planning meetings, in-person teaching time and other administrative tasks such as:

Program Overview:

The Performing Justice Project (PJP) was founded in 2010 as a signature program of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS) at the University of Texas at Austin. PJP utilizes art (theatre, digital storytelling, poetry and spoken word, visual art etc.) and performance to engage young people in conversations surrounding gender and racial justice. Through this process, they devise and share original performance material that creates opportunity for dialogue with the goal of further activating personal and communal change. During the Spring of 2023, the Learning and Interpretation Department at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is very excited to engage Students from Jack Yates High School and Energy Institute High School in the first PJP to utilize art and objects as the primary method of exploration.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Experience or interest in teaching in museums or other non-traditional learning environments
  • Experience or interest in the arts (Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre, Creative Writing etc.)
  • Prior teaching or facilitation experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with high-school age students
  • Punctual, adaptable/flexible, and dependable
  • Receptive to interdisciplinary learning models/approaches

Education and Eligibility:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field; OR, any equivalent combination of related work experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Experience Working as an Artist, Teacher or Teaching Artist.

Anticipated Schedule:

  • The program will begin in January of 2023 and is envisioned to encompass the full academic semester.
