Job purpose
The Assistant Shipping Manager is responsible for assisting the Director of Shipping in overseeing the daily operations of the shipping department and all that it entails. The Assistant Shipping Manager must be able to communicate well with employees in the department to ensure a peaceful environment. They are responsible for communication between the shipping department and the other departments to make sure that all shipments are filled as ordered.
Duties and responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, professional and safe working environment.
- Disperse scheduling according to load and personnel available.
- Inform employees of changes to company policies.
- Communicate information between upper management and shipping team.
- Ensure that FIFO and other company procedures are being followed for gathering, staging, and shipping orders.
- Handle issues that may arise between employees in department.
- Make sure equipment is in proper working order (i.e. forklifts)
- Prepare sales orders with pick ticket number to facilitate gathering.
- Prepare load sheets to ensure proper weight distribution of load on trailer.
- Occasionally assist in the duties of the forklift operator as needed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to change.
- Forklift experience required.
- Knowledge of Microsoft office and Excel considered a plus.
- Prior management experience is not required but considered a plus
Physical requirements
- Occasionally lifting weight up to (60) sixty pounds.
- Occasionally bending, twisting and turning while lifting weight of equal or less than fifty (50) pounds.
- Walking up to two (2) or more miles a day.
- Operating machinery i.e. forklifts.
- Working at temperatures from 0 to 100 plus degrees Fahrenheit.
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
