What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Specialist position at Midstate Independent Living Choices, Inc (MILC)?
Midstate Independent Living Choices (MILC) is currently seeking applicants to fill a Part-time Peer Specialist position. This position is located in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. This is a 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Wisconsin Peer Specialist Certification is required. Employee hired without certification must be eligible to become certified within six(6) months of employment. and will be limited term employee until certification obtained at which time employee status changes to full-time non-exempt with benefits listed.
Individual must have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges and intentionally share personal recovery story as appropriate to assist consumer, providing hope and help in changing patterns and behaviors.
QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Peer Specialist Certification required
Identify as a person in mental health recovery with a Recovery Plan required
Familiar with the philosophy and concepts of independent living required
Ability to share personal recovery story as appropriate to assist consumers required
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook email and internet required
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills required
Experience in the delivery of presentations and training to groups required
Knowledge of community resources, service systems, benefits, entitlements and supports utilized by people with disabilities required
Knowledge of Assistive Technology preferred
Knowledge of information that should not be kept in confidence required (i.e. threats to harm self or others) and be open with consumers regarding this. Report threats to harm self or others immediately to the staff in charge and to supervisor
Possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, provide proof of auto liability insurance meeting agency minimum limits and be able to meet agency driving standards
Ability to maintain confidential information including but not limited to financial data, consumer information or other non-public proprietary agency information required
Ability to pass a periodic WI Caregiver Background Check including Department of Justice Criminal Record Check required
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include but not limited to:
Demonstrate IL Philosophy in daily work
Staff Recovery Centers
Facilitate 1:1 and support group recovery efforts
Provide 5 Core Services: Information & Referral, Advocacy, Peer Support, IL Skills Training, and Transition.
Support consumers in the development of a Recovery Plan and/or Independent Living (IL) Plan
Perform intake and maintain case files with mandated and required forms and documentation
Provide coordination, follow along and support for consumers with open files
Inform consumers of their right to accept or waive the IL Plan
Provide information regarding the purpose of peer support and recovery models
Provide respect for the consumers and view what is traditionally labeled as “resistance” as “self direction”
Set boundaries with consumers
Facilitate and oversee fundraising activities, encourage member participation
Encourage consumers to become self-directed, focus on their strengths, exercise use of natural supports and view themselves as helpful, not just helped
Complete and submit timesheets and travel vouchers as required
Complete all required documentation
Attend monthly mandatory clinical supervision meetings and department meetings
Attend conferences/trainings/workgroups both in and out of service area as approved by supervisor
Adhere to and abide by all agency policies and procedures
All other tasks as assigned
