What are the responsibilities and job description for the Opinion Editor, MSNBC position at MSNBC?
MSNBC Digital is hiring an Opinion Editor to work with both its opinion teams. You will have a deep understanding of what drives conversations and a passion for the many ways politics intersect with the economy, culture, climate science, and so much more. You will have excellent news judgment, meticulous copy editing skills, a keen understanding of journalistic standards and a track record that proves you can hew to the standards of MSNBC. You will be familiar with the MSNBC brand, its shows and its on-air hosts.
Position is based in New York City
PLEASE NOTE: this is a six-month contract position.
This position is represented by the Writers Guild of America — East.
What you will do:
- Work closely with our opinion writers and editors to assign, edit and occasionally write perspective essays and analysis on politics, breaking news and culture.
- Recruit and cultivate a roster of diverse and exciting freelance writers to add and complement our existing staff voices
- Craft powerful and thought-provoking arguments on a wide range of timely topics
- Coordinate with MSNBC editors and show producers to anticipate big events, help maintain a team-wide editorial calendar and coordinate short and long-term digital coverage plans and strategy
- Work with our staff writers to help them improve their arguments and copy
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience
- 5 years editing in a digital newsroom environment
- 4 years editing opinion journalism
- Must understand how to work with writers to craft a compelling lead, angle and headline
- Must have the desire to work in a creative, demanding, competitive environment
- Must be a skilled editor with outstanding communication skills
- Must be professional, nimble and successful working across newsroom teams, platforms and with partners
Salary : $93,000 - $110,000
