Position Summary:
The Associate Vice President of Planned Giving (AVP PG), under the direction of the Senior Vice President for University Advancement, is responsible for the overall administration and strategic direction of NJIT's comprehensive planned giving program. This includes lifecycle marketing and managing a portfolio of planned giving prospects. The AVP PG provides strategic leadership and oversees the daily activities of the Leadership, Major Gifts, and Donor Relations teams to ensure that leadership/major gift prospects and donors identified, cultivated, solicited, and stewarded effectively and strategically. This position requires a deep understanding of planned giving techniques, fundraising methodologies, and strong collaboration skills to work with donors, prospects, and their advisors.

Essential Functions:
  • Identify, cultivate, educate, solicit, and steward prospects for planned, estate, and outright gifts in support of the university.
  • Develop, manage, and expand his or her portfolio through all phases of the giving cycle; qualified, active, and major planned giving prospects.
  • Develop formal proposals for prospective donors, illustrations of planned gifts, and ensure that appropriate documentation for all planned gifts is developed and executed.
  • In consultation with the Senior Vice President of University Advancement, establish annual dollar, visit, and solicitation goals for planned giving.
  • Design, produce, execute, and assess marketing initiatives to raise awareness of and interest in planned gifts, including informational and estate planning seminars, promotional pieces, targeted mailings and emails, and other initiatives.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise regarding state and federal taxes, gift and estate giving methods and vehicles, and the legal aspects of planned giving.
  • Work with the Prospect Research and Major and Leadership Gifts teams to uncover new prospects and take an active role in educating these prospects about planned giving opportunities.
  • Collaborate with frontline fundraisers in developing strategies for cultivating, soliciting, and securing from their prospects blended gifts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with estate and financial planning professionals.
  • Work with the Alumni Relations and Donor Engagement teams to design and execute cultivation and stewardship activities and collateral events, including those connected to 50th reunion classes, that support planned giving initiatives.
  • Coordinate all aspects of NJIT’s planned giving website and other planned giving publications, including donor stories and vendor management.
  • Develop an annual plan to steward identified planned giving donors.
  • Guide and mentor Development & University Advancement staff members on best-practice activities, strategies, programs, and priorities related to planned giving.
  • Serves as a senior member of the Senior Vice President's management team. Assists with special projects and administrative needs, as required.
  • Directly supervise, mentor, and manage the work and outcomes of Donor Engagement and the Executive Directors of Development to ensure that leadership/major gift prospects and donors progress through the moves management pipeline in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the advancement field, preferably in a higher education setting, including a documented record of success in soliciting and closing major gifts and planned gifts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of constituent relations and fundraising for higher education and an expert in planned giving.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program for planned giving, establish goals and objectives that translate into AOP.
  • Exceptional writing and speaking skills.
  • Working knowledge of charitable tax law and familiarity with financial and estate planning.
  • Familiarity with software applications such as Crescendo and/or PG Calc.
  • Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to: establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues; facilitate multiple projects, make decisions, and meet deadlines; manage and motivate volunteers effectively and efficiently; and identify problems and develop creative, timely, and efficient solutions.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the annual salary range for this position is $210,000-$225,000 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
