    PURPOSE:

    The Building Nurse provides appropriate care of illness or injury to students, administers medication and completes treatments and procedures, and assists the Certified School Nurse in the day to day running of the Health Office.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Provides appropriate care of illness or injury to students in accordance with school district policies and procedures and professional standards.
    • Maintains compliance as required by the Illinois School Code and Illinois Department of Public Health for state mandated student health requirements.
    • Administers medications and completes treatments and procedures as ordered by the medical care provider and documents appropriately.
    • Communicates with the Certified School Nurse, other school personnel, parents/guardians, and medical care providers for the coordination of care.
    • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
    • Completes necessary documentation on individual health records.
    • Maintains the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies.
    • Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
    • Optimizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge.
    • Assist in training 1:1 Nurse Aides, willingness to be flexible to support nurse coverages for absences.
    • Adheres to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS:

    • Act as a positive role model for students.
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding work with special needs students.
    • Supplement the work of the assigned licensed staff member including, but not limited to, all required paperwork, organization of classroom, and supervision of students.
    • Support NSSEO policy, NSSEO and governing board goals and objectives, and The School Code of Illinois.
    • Assumes other duties and projects as assigned.



    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    • To perform the physically demanding job functions, strength and/or endurance for lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling are constantly required.
    • To perform the most physically demanding job functions, the physical capabilities of climbing and balancing are seldom required.
    • To perform the most physically demanding job functions, the physical body movement of stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling is constantly required.
    • To perform the most physically demanding job functions, the upper extremity physical capabilities reaching, handling, and/or fine motor dexterity are constantly required.
    • Exposure to temperature extremes is seldom or not present.
    • Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.) is seldom or not present.
    • Frequency of exposure to injury to self and/or others is occasionally present.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Valid license as a registered professional nurse in Illinois (bachelor’s degree preferred)
    • Ability to travel within NSSEO and move about NSSEO and programs as necessary.
    • Current Adult and Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and AED certification.
    • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English to understand directions and communicate with students and staff.
    • Ability to physically move about the building.
    • Ability to lift and position students.
    • Ability to participate in NSSEO approved behavior management procedures, and apply training in crisis situations including physical management of students.
    • Computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology.
