Position Description
This will be a full-time teacher that will facilitate a 40-minute Social Emotional Learning specials class, focused on teaching mindfulness and heartfulness practices through the research-based curriculum, Second Step, on a rotating 4-day schedule, to students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
Responsibilities
- Follows the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Norwalk Board of Education.
- Though games, videos, and hands-on lessons, students will learn skills for learning (such as self-talk), empathy, emotion management, and problem solving.
- Facilitate teacher trainings so that they can continue the practices students are learning in their classrooms, making mindfulness a daily practice during morning meeting as well as throughout the day, as needed.
- Attend grade level meetings and behavior team meetings, when applicable
- Serve on the PBIS Committee
- Facilitate parent and family workshops
- Collaborate with the PE/ Health teacher for lesson planning and delivery
- The teacher will work off of a cart and travel from classroom to classroom.
- Manages the classroom and individual student behavior utilizing a restorative practices approach to maintain an advantageous learning environment.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required.
- Designs clear and specific learning assessments.
- Maintains a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner.
- Maintains a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior through the implementation of the PBIS framework.
- Maintains ongoing communication with parents.
- Assists in the selection of textbooks, equipment and other education materials.
- Establishes and maintains professional relationships.
- Participates in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve biliteracy instructional practices and positively affect student achievement.
- Experience working with young children in mindfulness meditation.
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, in the target language.
- Effective, active listening skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others in a close, collaborative environment.
- Organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of the development of the emergent bilingual student.
- Experience using strategies for second language learners such as SIOP, the Bridge, and other biliteracy strategies.
- CSDE Active 043 Health K-12 certification
- Mindfulness training
- School psychologist or social worker background preferred
- Background in development psychology, preferred
- Fluency in Spanish preferred.
