Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Genetic Counselor.
The Genetic Counselor to be recruited is to manage and execute research studies within the Aravinda Chakravarti lab in the Center for Human Genetics & Genomics at NYU Langone Health. He/she will work as
part of a research team investigating the molecular genetic basis of a number of complex disorders, but primarily Hirschsprung disease. This individual will play a leadership role in our ongoing clinical research study on Hirschsprung disease, primarily the recruitment of study participants. They will actively manage and participate in genomic studies of a large cohort of these patients and their families, including a new emphasis on syndromic forms of Hirschsprung disease. Additionally, they will participate in a bi-weekly comprehensive colorectal developmental disorder clinic and a system-wide genomic medicine effort called DECIPHEHR in which they will work with the broader clinical community at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. This is an ideal position for an individual interested in bridging research and clinical work while advancing genomic medicine. The individual is expected to serve as liaison with internal and external collaborators and funding agencies, ensure the faithful execution of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA by balancing the obligations to patient/subject, Principal Investigator, research team and sponsor(s), and,works autonomously and with limited oversight.
Job Responsibilities:
- Human Subjects’ Research - As applicable, submits and updates necessary documents required by the NYU Institutional Board (IRB), NYU Office of Clinical Trials and any other appropriate parties in order to obtain approval to conduct human subjects’ research.
- Recruitment & Research Activities - Respond to in-person, e-mail and phone inquiries from research patients, research investigators and health care providers regarding Dr. Chakravarti’s genetic study of Hirschsprung disease that aims to identify the constituent genes and understand the molecular basis of multifactorial inheritance. The needs are to explain the research study, obtain informed consent and medical/surgical/pathological information in a confidential manner, and, coordinate collection of blood and tissue samples. Maintain and update database and files organizing this information. Update study website and publish periodic newsletter for families. Act as liaison to professional organizations and patient support groups. Provide genetic information (brochures, pamphlets, etc.) to families regarding Hirschsprung disease, answer questions regarding Hirschsprung disease clinical research study, and refer research study patients/families to other health care personnel as needed upon request. In addition, facilitate confirmation of incidental findings in genetic studies and refer participants to appropriate health care providers as needed.
- Project Management - Coordinate and maintain our Hirschsprung disease phenotypic database and laboratory information management system. Facilitate completion of IRB applications, continuing review, and other compliance documents at actively enrolling collaborative sites. Plan quarterly conference calls for collaborative sites and Steering Committee calls as needed. Manage shipment of study materials and receipt, processing, and database entry for all samples and data received for the biorepository. Obtain informed consent and coordinate collection of data and blood samples for NYULH and other referral center patients. Recruit new collaborative sites through management of the biorepository website and coordinating activities with appropriate professional societies.
- Clinical Competency - competency in handling, storing and shipping of blood, saliva or other tissue and DNA specimens as well as basic DNA extraction protocols. In house training and certification will be provided. Other trainings and competencies may be included as required.
- Reporting and Data Analysis - Perform analysis of genotypic and phenotypic data of Hirschsprung disease studies in collaboration with other members of the research group. Prepares and provides reports to all necessary parties (e.g., the principal investigator, sponsoring agency, collaborators, etc.) on the progress of studies as needed. Recommends changes/additions to established data fields. Prepares progress report of all human subjects studies within the lab. May oversee staff assigned to this responsibility.
- Participates in special clinical and research projects and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Masters Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program. Ability to interface effectively with patients/research subjects, all levels of management and be able to work and communicate
effectively with both internal and external collaborators. Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems; ability
to work well under pressure. Strong understanding and knowledge base of clinical/research studies. Ability to
work within a team environment as well as independently. Time management skills and ability to multi task. Proficiency in using various Microsoft Office applications.Effective oral, written, communication, interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Working knowledge of Redcap and labvantage database system is a plus.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $63,935.04 - $105,000.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
