A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) at OSALD works with students and school staff to improve student functioning and access to learning. Their responsibilities may include:
Adapting the environment
Modifying classroom tools, materials, and the environment to meet student needs and abilities
Assessing students
Assisting the Occupational Therapist (OTR) in evaluating students' fine and gross motor skills, sensory integration, and other developmental skills
Providing services
Offering occupational therapy services directly to students or through consultation to address IEP goals
Promoting independence
Helping students develop daily living skills, such as self-care and moving from a bed to a wheelchair
Recommending equipment
Suggesting assistive devices and equipment to increase student functioning
Maintaining records
Keeping daily records of treatments and progress notes, and helping maintain student records
Organizing activities
Arranging furniture and displaying materials to support instruction, and creating a clean and orderly learning environment
Managing behavior
Implementing behavior management programs and reporting student behavior to the OTR
Consulting with others
Collaborating with the OTR and educational team, and consulting with teachers, parents, and school staff
Complying with regulations
Following local, state, and federal regulations regarding confidentiality, due process, and other procedures
