Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Safely transport preschool children and staff to and from Head Start center in compliance with federal, state, and program regulations and policies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Reason position exists is to perform these functions):
TRANSPORTATION
- Ensure bussed children are transported safely to and from class following transportation policies.
- Plan fixed bus routes that meet transportation requirements and update as needed.
- Provide transportation adaptations for children with disabilities, as needed.
- Provide vehicle and pedestrian safety training to each child and family at orientation.
- Ensure current child emergency forms are kept on the bus.
MAINTENANCE
- Perform pre-trip inspection, document, and submit per policy and procedure.
- Keep bus fueled. May be required to pump own fuel.
- Regularly clean interior and exterior of bus.
- Carry out established procedures for flat tires, mechanical trouble, and emergencies.
- Report any mechanical or maintenance concerns immediately to the Fleet and Facilities Coordinator.
- Schedule regular and needed maintenance, if assigned.
CHILD SUPERVISION
- Ensure children are supervised at all times and never left alone with volunteers.
- Maintain appropriate ratios and group size at all times.
- Ensure children are signed in and out of class and bus and released only to authorized adults.
DOCUMENTATION and COMMUNICATION
- Meet federal, state and program documentation requirements with accurate, objective, complete, timely and well organized records.
- Partner with bus monitor and other to team members to ensure timely communication of information.
- Collaborate and problem solve with staff, children and parents.
- Positive communication and interactions with young children, their families, and staff.
- Facilitate communication with others by using available technologies (e.g., phone, fax, e-mail, file sharing)
- Establish consistent weekly schedule including time for team communication and availability to parents.
- Protect confidentiality. Share information internally to coordinate service delivery on a need to know basis.
HEALTH
- Follow posted hand washing procedures.
- Follow Universal Precautions in the event of exposure to blood/bodily fluids.
- Follow food safety guidelines when joining children for meals in the classroom.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Oregon School Bus Drivers Certification
- Class B or C CDL with S and P endorsements
- Preferred one year paid experience and/or training directly related to the position description.
- Maintain driving certification as required by South Coast Head Start and Oregon Department of Education.
- Driving record must meet Oregon Department of Education requirements
- Valid medical examiner’s certificate is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Geographic Area: Coos, Curry, and Coastal Douglas Counties Primary worksite:
- May move or lift items up to 51 pounds.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Primarily indoors, in a climate-controlled environment; may not have access to sunlight. Occasional activities outside in a non-climate-controlled environment.
- Potential for open workstations and cubicles with moderate to high noise; work from home where available.
- Some travel-Required ODL and proof of insurance (ORCCA Policy).
OTHER:
- Reliable method of getting to work.
- Must be free from illegal drugs, may be subject to suspicion testing.
- Must be enrolled in the Oregon Department of Education-Child Care Division Central Background Registry at time of hire and update it as required.
- Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification within 30 days of hire and update it as required.
- Oregon Food Handler’s card or ServSafe® Food Safety Certification within 30 days of hire and update it as required.
- Health Appraisal within 30 days of hire and update it as required.
- Must be able to pass the State of Oregon Criminal Background Check.
- A current Oregon Driver’s License is required.
- Proof of automobile liability insurance @ $100,000/300,000 liability limits and maintain such limits.
