What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Care Attendant position at Pierce Transit?

Pierce Transit is an independent municipal organization dedicated to fulfilling the mission of improving people's quality of life by providing safe, reliable, innovative, and useful transportation services that are locally based and regionally connected. 
 
We are currently recruiting for conscientious and detail-oriented Fleet Care Attendants to join the Fleet Maintenance Department at Pierce Transit.
 
The work of the Fleet Care Attendant is among the most essential jobs at Pierce Transit. Providing clean and sanitary buses communicates to our passengers that we understand their safety and well-being are paramount.  

 

A successful candidate for this job will be a self-starter who takes pride in their work, keeps safety at the forefront, and has a track record of outstanding customer service. Reliability and a solid work history will round out this candidate’s application.  
 
Applicants should have at least one year of experience performing similar work and will be ready to take on the duties of the job to include:

  • Perform regular, detailed cleaning of bus, SHUTTLE, van, and automobile interiors.
  • Be prepared for both indoor and outdoor work.
  • Take on the responsibility for safely performing all assigned work.
  • Use sound independent judgment to make decisions and take actions on assigned duties.
  • Work well with others.
  • Ensure that work standards meet and/or exceed expectations.

All of Pierce Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  Pierce Transit offers two Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plans to choose from, PERS2 and PERS3, as well as a matching program for 457 deferred compensation.

Pierce Transit provides an ORCA Card benefit for each employee and a family member. This benefit provides free access to service on Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Seattle Monorail, Seattle Streetcar, King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Foot Ferry.

Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare. 
 

PAID LEAVE:
Full-time Pierce Transit employees are eligible to receive 11 paid holidays, 2 personal paid holidays, 12 days of sick leave, 12 vacation days per year, and the ability to earn up to 2 Wellness Days by participating in a qualifying wellness activity and the annual survey. Part-time employees, receive pro-rated leave, to include sick leave, vacation, personal holiday and holiday pay.  Vacation leave accrual rates increase per the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.


The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  1. Washes interior walls, ceiling, windows, handrails, mirrors and seats of coaches.
  2. Cleans driver's compartment and area behind doors in step wells.
  3. Removes gum, candy and other foreign materials from seats, walls and floors.
  4. Mops floors and step wells.
  5. Reports any damage to the interior of vehicles.
  6. Enters work order data into a computerized work order system.
  7. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  8. Responsible for requesting supplies on a timely basis.
  9. Makes bus and paratransit vehicle exchanges.
  10. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Required:   

  • One year of experience in related custodial work. 
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old. 
  • License Requirements: 
    • Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter.
    • Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) prior to hire  
    • Must successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter. 
    • Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.


Special Requirements: 

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen
  • Must be willing to work any shift as assigned (weekends and/or swing or graveyard shift are likely).

Knowledge of:

  • The care and use of mops, brooms, scrub brushes, dusters and vacuum cleaners;
  • The use of cleaning materials such as soaps, powders and concentrated spray/aerosol cleaners.

Ability to:

  • Take directions from oral or written instructions;
  • Work in a team setting with other employees;
  • Perform computerized work order methods and procedures;
  • Pass a job related examination;
  • Pass federally required drug and alcohol testing mandates;
  • Drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and CDL as required.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to work any day and any shift as assigned. Shifts are assigned by seniority.    
  • Hours worked during shifts scheduled to begin between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. receive a shift differential of $0.75 per hour.        
  • Hours worked between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. receive a shift differential of $2.50 per hour.    
This classification is covered by the Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy and is subject to random testing.
